Orosman at Zafira Marks Dulaang UP Directorial Debut

Orosman at Zafira Reviews Gibbs Cadiz of Philippine Daily Inquirer has exulted Dulaang UP’S Orosman at Zafira as a “brave, resonant show (that) is the first great production of the year,” while Exie Abola of The Philippine Star has deemed it as “mesmerizing theatre” and “downright electrifying.”

Continuing Theatre Tradition On a personal level, it is heartening to note the continuation of theatre tradition with this production.

I, myself, first tread the Wilfrido Maria Guerrero stage as part of a varied student ensemble of Tennessee Williams’ Camino Real, which gave me the opportunity to work with director Tony Mabesa and choreographer Douglas Nierras.

In the same vein, majority of the ensemble are theatre arts students who have obviously dedicated their passion and energy into making the show a vibrant piece of theatre. (Tanghalang Pilipino’s Artistic Director Dennis Marasigan was a proud father that night as he watched his daughter onstage.)

Another connection was with director and choreographer Dexter Santos, who marks his Dulaang UP directorial debut with Orosman at Zafira, who recounted in his program notes that when he watched Anton Juan’s production of Death in the Form of a Rose for Dulaang UP, his passion for theatre rose to new heights.

I was also fortunate enough to be part of the controversial play as part of the ensemble.
