Wicked Manila — The Most Requested Musical

Kerry Ellis as Elphaba in Wicked London

The question most often asked by theatre clients is whether Wicked is going to be staged.

Gwyn Guanzon, who recently saw the West End production and who kindly lent me his Wicked London program, is of the opinion that, technically, we may not have the proper equipment to mount it.

Quite true. Definitely, though, we have the musical talent in the form of our musicians and musical theatre actors.

Personally, I’m fine with pared down sets and lack of technical gizmo. Theatre is, and will always be, powered by brilliant actors.

True, although I don’t think Wicked would work as a production if we had to adapt it for a smaller stage and a limited budget. I’m more interested in a local staging of Spring Awakening. It’s relatively low-budget, and relies more on the talent of the actors and the power of the plot and music.

Oh how I wish Wicked will find its way to Manila. That would be an awesome 2008 treat for sure! :D

    Happy New Year, Lorna. ;)

I instantly loved the Original Cast Recording of the soundtrack and I agree that we have the talent to make its staging musically satisfying in the very least. But I’m afraid that won’t be enough to make it the success as it is in Broadway and the West End. Much of Wicked’s magic rely on the spectacle (and I believe Kristin Chenoweth’s and Idina Menzel’s introductory performance). But if some courageous folks will give it a go anyway, I’ll sure be there to watch it anyhow :)

I have watched Wicked in NY and I would love to see a Manila-production. I love the songs, esp Defying Gravity. As for the actors, we have so many here with great abilities to give justice to the musical. but I have to agree, though, that we lack the technical equipment to capture the magic of Wicked.I can’t imagine Defying Gravity without the levitation scene… Simply wow! (BTW, Hairspray will be having a production here in November. Watch out for it guys!)

I agree with everyone — we have the talent, but we lack the technical equipment to stage Wicked here. I also agree with Julie — Spring Awakening might be a good production here in the Philippines!

If our high school theatre group was able to produce Wicked, then surely a professional theatre group can produce it too. With a little improvising and all that, Wicked will be something to look forward to in Manila.

i want to watch this.. hope they’ll have it here..

I watched Wicked at the Pantages, and it was AWESOME.

If we were able to bring Miss Saigon here (which cost a lot of $$$ eek), then maybe we could bring it here, too.

If that isn’t possible, then hey, I’m fine with a not-so-spectacular production. I’d be satisfied seeing a low-budget prod. I just LOVE that show!

I would LOVE to see Wicked live. But I do think it would cost too much.
Here’s an idea, why don’t they do Rent again? That would be great. I was too young the first time they did it.
And I agree with one of the posters, Spring Awakening would be great too.
    Another suggestion would be Aida

Well, I can’t wait for this ! and i really hope it gets staged, and they get Lea Salonga or Idina Menzel as ELphie !

I also wish they’d do a local production of LEGALLY BLONDE the musical. I’ve seen the MTV airing, it awesome !

I want to see it here in the Philippines as a Philippine version. Tagalog ang mga kanta. Sana…..

I think the a Wicked-Manila Version will do just fine!~ I’ve seen Wicked being staged in a school very close to my heart, and they did well with a few technical adjustments (because copying the entire set of the original production is just ridiculously expensive!~)

Basta, I fell in love with the Original Broadway Cast Recording the cast… and I’m looking forward to this play being staged professionally in our side of the planet! =D
