Sweeney Todd Film Philippine Premiere

I can state with absolute certainty that the Philippine Premiere of Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is on 16 January 2008. How do I know? I heard it from the marketing person in charge of the MTRCB screening, whose members were watching it when I dropped by the Warner Brothers Philippines offices in Ortigas Center on 19 December 2007.

I sincerely hope the MTRCB doesn’t cut too much out. There’s definitely blood and gore, but I’m sure director Tim Burton has only included what is cinematically necessary.

Now, let’s play six degrees of separation. How is Johnny Depp related to the musical Into the Woods? Well, Johnny Depp is playing Sweeney Todd in the film version of the musical by Stephen Sondheim. Stephen Sondheim, aside from being the lyricist and composer of Sweeney Todd, is also the lyricist and composer of Into the Woods! So the connection is actually less than six degrees…

Johnny Depp didn’t accept the role of Sweeney Todd until he was sure that he could do justice to the Stephen Sondheim notes and rhythm, which are quite difficult (just ask any musical theatre actor).

According to Wikipedia, Johnny Depp’s performance, together with Helena Bonham Carter and the direction of Tim Burton, have been nominated for the 65th Golden Globe Awards.

Another Stephen Sondheim masterpiece after the recently concluded Into the Woods… To quote Rod from Avenue Q, “My cup runneth over…”
