Dogeaters Manila Reviews

(From L seated) Gina Alajar and Joel Torre (standing) Jon Santos, Teresa Herrera, Ana Abad-Santos and Michael de MesaThree of the people I invited to write a review of Dogeaters were able to catch it during its first two weekends.

Walter Ang of Click the City observed, “For those in the audience who lived through or grew up in the 70s and 80s, the stories in Dogeaters are at once familiar yet blurred, distinct yet fractured. Watching the play becomes an exercise in gaining perspective on the events that inspired the veiled retellings onstage as filtered by time and through the playwright’s distance from where they actually happened.”

Paul Henson’s review, which can be found in the Youth & Campus section of Manila Bulletin, has this to say about Jessica Hagedorn’s Dogeaters, “A sense of jadedness pervades the entire play, the voice of many who’ve perhaps been away for far too long, or one who’s lost that sense of connection, such that the nation’s characters are reduced to painful bits and pieces from memory – stereotypes and caricatures.

“It comes as no surprise that among all the characters in the play, it is Trini and Lao, the two most ordinary, most regular folks in the story who standout. They’re your ordinary citizens who don’t have the luxury of simply tsk-tsk-ing every unfortunate incident in the country, then packing up and leaving for some first world country.”

Politically inclined blogger Spanky Enriquez of Manila Boy, on the other hand, finds Dogeaters “the perfect balm to remind you that our country deserves better. DOGEATERS should open some eyes, force many deafened ears to listen, and make some mouths start talking. The power of prose and poetry cannot be underestimated.”

Dogeaters will run till 02 December 2007 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati. For tickets call Atlantis Productions at 892.7078/840.1187 or TicketWorld at 891.9999.

They made a play out of Jessica Hagedorn’s Dogeater?! No way!!! And nooooo…the last showing is already next week? NOoooo…!!! *falls on my knees*

I read the book early this year and thought it was quite interesting. Had no idea they turned it into a play. Would love to catch that one if they have a re-run next year.

    Think they will? :)

    Hi Oats,

I’m sorry but, honestly, I don’t think there will be a rerun. There’s four shows to choose from:

    Fri & Sat 8pm
    Sat & Sun 3pm
