Grey’s Anatomy & St. Luke’s Medical Center Women’s Health Care Unit (Ire)
Death and hospitals are a classic mix. However, there’s no need to remind patients of Death’s incessant presence when one is already beleaguered with its possibility. So after waiting for an hour with a friend in the St. Luke’s Medical Center Women’s Health Care Unit on 08 October 2007, I requested to speak to the supervisor.
Section Manager Cathy Gaspar kindly listened to my observation that while I have been waiting in the reception area, it gave me the opportunity to watch a back to back episode of Grey’s Anatomy — the latter half of one episode and the beginnings of the next episode.
“Grey’s Anatomy deals with the personal lives of the doctors as well as their patients.” Baldly, I continued, “People die in this show. In the first episode, someone died on the operating table. In the second episode, a patient is convinced she’s going to die if she gets operated on. And, if I remember correctly, because this is an old episode, she will die.
“I don’t know the personal lives of the people in the waiting room, but some of them may be facing a life and death situation, and I don’t think they need to be reminded that they can die in the hospital.
I concluded, “Of course, the reception staff is quite busy and probably didn’t notice what’s on the TV.”
Ms. Cathy Gaspar kindly changed the channel to the Lifestyle Network where Martha Stewart was demonstrating how to do a certain dish.
Thank you very much Ms. Cathy Gaspar of St. Luke’s Medical Center Women’s Health Care Unit!
