Desperate Housewives Apology an Insult to the Medical Fil-Am Community
ABC Apology GMAnews.tv reports that Nafcon (National Alliance for Filipino Concerns) spokesperson Rico Foz has stated in his email, “The simplistic nature of ABC’s apology only insults our community even more.”
ABC Deletion To appease the tumult, ABC decided to delete the Desperate Housewives controversial line, uttered by Teri Hatcher’s character Susan, “OK, before we go any further, can I check these diplomas? Just to make sure they aren’t, like, from some med school in the Philippines?””
Inquirer.net writes, “Charissa Gilmore, ABC vice president for media relations said on Thursday (Friday in Manila) that the entire episode had been removed from digital platform and would not be available for viewing “until edits have been made.”
Nafcon Demands Inquirer.net and GMAnews.tv further details the demands of the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns on ABC.
First, broadcast a public apology before the next episode of Desperate Housewives
Second, conduct a thorough investigation of the Desperate Housewives writers and producers in order to track down the origins of the line and mete out appropriate disciplinary action on those responsible.
Third, implement a cultural sensitivity training for the ABC network staff.
Fourth, write more shows depicting Filipinos and other minority groups as “prominent, positive role models.”
Fifth, give support for Filipino-American projects that will strengthen diversity awareness.
What You Can Do Credit must also be given to Mr. Kevin Nadal for spearheading an online petition that was at the forefront for demanding an apology from network giant ABC. If you wish to read and/or sign the petition, please click here.
