Into the Woods & the Stephen Sondheim Lyrics
The title “Into the Woods” belies the witty and brilliant lyrics of the legendary Stephen Sondheim. The following are excerpts from Into the Woods, which combines several well-known characters from the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales.
A simple Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk), talks to his best friend, Milky White (the cow he exchanges for the magic beans), and promises earnestly, “I’ll see you soon again. I hope that when I do, it won’t be on a plate.”
Cinderella, confused as to what to do with an enamored Prince, has an inspired idea, “You just leave him a clue. For example- a shoe. And then see what HE’LL do.”
Cinderella’s Prince is also confused as to why a maiden would run away from him and enumerates his attributes, “Am I not sensitive, clever, well-mannered, considerate, passionate, charming, as kind as I’m handsome, and heir to the throne?! “
The Wolf that ate Little Red Riding Hood engages her in conversation and growls under his breath, “There’s no possible way to describe what you feel when you’re talking to your meal!”
Contrary to expectation, Little Red Riding Hood finds herself attracted to the Wolf, “And he made me feel excited… Well, excited and scared.”

Into the Woods Manila will have a limited run from 09 November till 08 December 2007 at the Music Museum in Greenhills Shopping Center San Juan.
Into the Woods is being staged in Manila Philippines by Monique Wilson’s New Voice Company, Asia’s pioneering theatre company, through special arrangement with Music Theatre International of New York.
