High School Musical 2 and the Movie Musical
One of the most wonderful consequences of High School Musical is introducing another generation to the wonders of the musical both in the theatre and movies. And this effect continues with the sequel to High School Musical — High School Musical 2
Sharpay and Esther Williams Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) has a Fabulous number by the pool, where some of the dancers cum swimmers form patterns and line up by the poolside to dive gracefully into the pool, reminiscent of Esther Williams movies that reached a pinnacle with MGM classic The Million Dollar Mermaid
Ryan and Debbie Reynolds Chad (Corbin Bleu) vehemently declares I Don’t Dance to Ryan (Lucas Grabeel), and thus ensues a baseball based dance number that reminds me of the athletic football dance number from another MGM movie I Love Melvin where Debbie Reynolds gets tossed around as a human version of a football.
Troy and Gene Kelly Not that Troy (Zac Efron) is the hoofer that Gene Kelly was, but his solo Bet On It reminds me of Gene Kelly’s athleticism.
Gene Kelly’s athleticism coupled with his ballet training and artistry, produced some of the most memorable dance numbers ever, such as the immortal Singin in the Rain
High School Musical 2 and Dirty Dancing High School Musical 2 director Kenny Ortega (who incidentally worked with Gene Kelly) is the choreographer of surprise 1987 hit Dirty Dancing, which makes the country club contest conclusion of High School Musical 2 a GP version of Dirty Dancing’s ending.
