Avenue Q Manila and the Straight Male

“Real men watch musicals.”

That comment made me stop writing out a receipt for Avenue Q tickets to glance in askance, “Was there ever a doubt?”

Thus ensued a short discussion between Peter Juan and I on the perception that straight males do not watch musical theatre. If ever there was a musical that straight males can relate to, it’s Avenue Q.

Let’s explore some of the lyrics in this musical theatre fare.

The Internet is for Porn Gentlemen, I’m sure you will agree with Trekkie Monster as he chants to loud protests from lead puppet character Kate Monster that “The Internet is for Porn!”

Blowing and Eating Another character moons about his girlfriend, “She cooks like my mother and sucks like a Hoover. And I can’t wait to eat her pussy again!”

Loud Sex In celebration of loud and clear communication during sex, Gary Coleman and his Bad Idea Bears cheer, “When you and your partner are doing the nasty… you can be as loud as the hell you want!”

Lucy the Slut Then there’s Lucy the Slut breathlessly crooning ala Marilyn Monroe before belting, “I can tell just by looking that you’ve got it hard for me! For me! For me! For me! For me! For me!”

Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist Not that “you’ll ever commit a hate crime,” but you’ll be hit with the uncanny truth that “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist.” Everyone takes a hit from monsters to blacks to Polacks to Jews to Orientals.

Schadenfreude “It’s German for happiness at the misfortune of others!”

So from “exes getting STDs” to “CEOs being shackled,” the world is a much happier place because of schadenfreude

The Question Re Ernie and Bert Who hasn’t heard of the rumor that Ernie and Bert are gay? Avenue Q tackles the question with a pair of buddies sharing an apartment.

The possibility of being gay is explored in the song– “IF YOU WERE GAY THAT’D BE OKAY. I MEAN ‘CAUSE, HEY, I’D LIKE YOU ANYWAY. BECAUSE YOU SEE, IF IT WERE ME, I WOULD FEEL FREE TO SAY THAT I WAS GAY (BUT I’M NOT GAY.)”

Sex, Sex and Even More Sex So Avenue Q has something about sex, and a little more about sex. Oh, and did we mention sex? Not that Avenue Q is all about sex, there’s other stuff too.
