The Dawn at the Happy Birthday Cubism Productions Gig

Jett Pangan of The Dawn at the Happy Birthday Cubism Productions GigIt was with great hope, yet with a touch of futility, that I helped Jmi Orara, head of Cubism Productions, compose a SMS invite to the manager of The Dawn to headline the Happy Birthday Cubism Productions gig at Route 196 on 26 July 2007.

So it was with drop jaw to the floor amazement that The Dawn consented to grace Cubism Productions 1st year anniversary.

Working with Cubism Productions has made me aware of the industry practice of sharing the “gate” income wherein the proceeds from the entrance fees of the night are divided equally between the bands’ members after the bar owner’s cut.

Let’s just say that one must have passion for the music because the monetary compensation will most probably not cover one’s expenses.

Therefore, for The Dawn to consent to go back to such a system when they can surely demand their own price is a testament to their generosity and commitment to the Philippine musical industry.

And then, on 26 July 2007, it was with further astonishment when The Dawn played, not just the traditional three songs, but regaled the appreciative crowd, whom lead vocalist Jett Pangan laughingly referred to as The Dawn’s younger brothers and sisters, with SEVEN songs!

The Dawn started off the terrific Happy First Birthday celebration with a song that was to become the title of a Cinemalaya award winning film— Tulad ng Dati (As It Was).

And then, there’s The Dawn’s current hit Difference

Jett Pangan confessed that Little Paradise was based on his experience with a former girlfriend.

The Dawn paid tribute to a band that they love— U2 —which the crowd loved too.

The Dawn was supposed to end the set with their famous Enveloped Ideas, but clamors for an encore and the spectators’ obvious reverence, made them stay to savor the “Sarap talaga dito! (It’s great to be here!)” feeling.

Two brave fans shouted for Susi (Key) and Saling Pusa (Fifth Wheel).

Susi was the winner of the two, and it was a walk down memory lane, 1986 to be exact.

Rounding out Jett Pangan on vocals are legendary musicians Buddy Zabala on bass guitar and back up vocals, Francis Reyes on guitar and back up vocals, with JB Leonor on drums

After the encore, Jett Pangan assured the crowd, “Marami pang banda pagkatapos namin. Lahat magagaling. (There are more bands coming up. And they’re all good.)”

The Dawn was later followed by Stonefree & Hilera, and the Cubism Productions bands of Elevator Action & Ishlavooh and Sympatika

However, the cigarette smoke laden atmosphere can only be tolerated by my asthma prone lungs for a short period of time so off I went right after The Dawn. Sorry guys… :-(
