UK Bound Sheila Francisco in High School Musical Onstage

BBC called the search for the female actor to play Bloody Mary in the 2001 West End revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific a “nightmare” but director Trevor Nunn was finally able to heave a sigh of relief when he found Sheila Francisco.

Well known in Philippine theatre for her superb singing and dramatic presence onstage, Sheila Francisco impressed the London critics with her depiction of a mother who is determined to marry off her “native” daughter to a US soldier, while figuring prominently in the musical’s boiling cauldron of racial issues.

Siobhan Murphy of Metro writes, “But the character who steals every scene she’s in is Bloody Mary: Sheila Francisco is funny and engaging, with a stunning stinging voice, yet manages to convey a mother’s desperation to ’save’ her daughter by marrying her off to an American with heartbreaking intensity.”

Evening Standard’s Nicholas de Jongh described Sheila Francisco’s performance as a “comic and pathetic dynamo of emotions in good voice.”

In the impending UK tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, Sheila Francisco has been asked once again to reprise the role of Bloody Mary that will have her performing in 33 theaters all over England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
