Teriyaki Boy Company Owned Restaurant vs Franchise (Ire)
By reason of strategic location, we became habitués of Teriyaki Boy Katipunan, although my friends and I are familiar with several branches of Teriyaki Boy from Alabang to Tomas Morato. However, Teriyaki Boy Katipunan turned out to be several notches higher in terms of service (notably waiter Benjie Caezar “Bench” de la Cruz) that we started to go there by choice.
Therefore, when a friend and I decided to try out the newly opened branch of Teriyaki Boy at Tiendesitas, we were expecting a certain level of service, not as first-rate as Teriyaki Boy Katipunan, of course, but definitely at least the standard level of Teriyaki Boy service.
By the time the dishes were served, I had to call the manager and inform him that the service was abominable and below Teriyaki Boy standards, which caused us to leave and brave the slow moving traffic to Teriyaki Boy Katipunan.
What were my observations that I told the Teriyaki Boy Tiendesitas manager?
No Customary Turn Over The hostess did not turn us over to the waiter, making it difficult to order.
Absence of Server on the Floor Despite the presence of several diners, no server or waiter was on the dining floor to take care of any of the clients’ needs.
Personal Tussle The corridor leading to the employees’ entrance can be seen from the dining room area, a fact that a pair of employees chose to ignore as they had a personal physical tussle against the wall, which thankfully ended within a few seconds.
Difficulty in Making Requests A request for extra radish for the cold noodles was met with a “What?”
And when the requested radish finally arrived, it was a measly miniscule serving.
Sloppy Presentation The cellophane noodles strands of the Sukiyaki Soup were trailing by the dish’s side, which predictably strung out as the bowls were being served.
That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. We left right after talking to the manager.
A Possible Explanation for the Disparity Manager Alfred of Teriyaki Boy Katipunan offered the possible explanation for the great disparity in service.
Teriyaki Boy Katipunan is company owned while Teriyaki Boy Tiendesitas is a franchise.
Standardization of Service Whether it’s company owned or a franchise, there should be no difference in the standards of service.

Then Teriyaki Boy TriNoma is probably a franchise too, because the food we were served was not worth the standard T-Boy prices. The sukiyaki (worth P220++) had less than half the normal amount of noodles in it. Tsk.
Hi Teacher Lorna!
Have had similar experiences at other Teriyaki Boy branches. Dunno though if they are franchised stores or company-owned. The latest incident happened at T-Boy, Robinson’s Galleria. I ordered a T-Boy Chicken Don for Alexa and an order of Chawan Mushi for me (hehe, diet!).
Alexa had gobbled up every bit of her chicken and rice dish, and the Chawan Mushi still didn’t arrive (i followed it up about a zillion times!) and when it finally did, the custard was half-cooked! Good thing i was feeling great that sunday, otherwise i would have given the supervisor hell.
I got a refund and a sheepish smile. C’est tout.
They were also mopping and spraying the floors with disinfectant (trying to get ahead by cleaning up early because it was close to closing time) while customers were still eating (eeew to the smell, don’t they know that you can actually taste what you smell?)! Don’t these stores have standards?
Same thing happened at T-Boy, Promenade. They were “washing” the floor and turning over chairs on tables, spraying soap and lysol all over while customers were still eating! and they were doing that in the same area the customers were in. The least they could have done was close off a certain area and start cleaning from there, but noooo… they had to make sure all empty tables were clean and ready, so they can get an early start home. grrr.
