Pan’s Labyrinth the Film

Pan's Labyrinth the Film PosterMaybe it was the fact that my 28 April 2007 day started by being harassed verbally, physically and emotionally by the San Juan Police (another tale to be told in a different post) that made me revel in the juxtaposition of fantasy and reality of Pan’s Labyrinth the film. What made my film companion weak-kneed and light headed from the sheer atrocity of a 1944 Spanish fascist regime was exactly what my abused psyche needed to feel powerful and in control.

Pan’s Labyrinth graphic scenes of torture, torn flesh, callous murders and utter egotism contrasted beautifully with hopeful scenes of Ofelia/Princess Moanna trying to perform three tasks in order to regain her rightful place as part of the underworld’s noble family.

Aside from the excellent cinematography and special effects, it comforted me to gaze upon the graceful movements and superb acting of Doug Jones as The Faun and The Pale Man, for he is obviously an actor who has mastered his craft onstage.

Furthermore, to see the name of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Director Alfonso Cuaron as one of the producers made me truly joyful that the triple Oscar award winning film of director Guillermo del Toro — Pan’s Labyrinth — was borne into fruition with his help.
