Shangri-la Plaza Car Cleaning Attendant Attempt at Physical Intimidation (Ire)

My fulminating irritation with the car cleaning attendants stationed at Shangri-la Plaza came to a head on 13 March 2007 when one male attendant “retaliated” by walking closer to my side of the car and raising his shirt to ostensibly fan himself with the shirt’s edge.

It would be almost a week later before I could report the incident to the Shangri-la Plaza management. A Shangri-la Plaza security guard directed me to the 5th level Shangri-la Plaza offices (beside Cravings Restaurant).

I literally just walked in and requested for a meeting with someone from security. Surprisingly, two Safety and Security Officers met with me despite the short notice.

After giving a brief history of my numerous years as a Shangri-la Plaza client, I noted that Shangri-la Plaza’s security measures have always been impeccable and a notch higher than the other malls, thus making its clients feel quite secure in its premises.

However, I noted that in the past several months, its new car cleaning company employees have been exhibiting “kanto” behavior that makes its clients feel unsafe within the parking lot, thus, creating two atmospheres that are markedly different— a secure and professional atmosphere within the mall, and the total opposite in the parking lot.

The male attendants would congregate on the 7th level at the mouth of the car ramp, jump in front of the oncoming cars, ogle the Shangri-la Plaza clients and talk in very loud voices.

At about 3.30pm on 13 March 2007, I had barely gotten back inside my car from running errands around the mall, when one male attendant, whom I cannot identify by name since they had no name plates, arrived with a car behind him with the presumptuous expectation that I would leave ASAP. After a minute of non-movement of my vehicle, he had the temerity to signal me to move my car forward.

I have paid the flat rate of Php 45 for a parking slot in Shangri-la Plaza, and no one can make me leave until I’m good and ready. To make the point even clearer to the rude car cleaning attendant, I slowed down my movements.

Realizing that I was not responding to his directions, the car cleaning attendant retaliated by, as I’ve mentioned earlier, walking closer to my side of the car and raising his shirt to ostensibly fan himself with the shirt’s edge, a figurative raising of the third finger coupled with a threatening invasion of personal space.

I didn’t have the time at that moment to complain to upper management, but when the opportunity presented itself on 21 March 2007, I did so.

Accordingly, I would like to express my gratitude to Safety and Security Officers Nestor Dapar and Jun Fonacier for meeting with me and assuring me that they would be meeting with the car cleaning company supervisor right after our meeting.
