Daniel Radcliffe Dons Birthday Suit for Equus the Play
I am keeping my fingers crossed that a friend’s plans for a European vacation that will include a London trip just to see Daniel Radcliffe in the play Equus will push through this summer so that I can have a first hand account of how he fared in his coming of age stage debut.
I can only applaud the courage of Daniel Radcliffe to take on such a complex role, and for theatre no less, where he has to face a live audience for months to come. I am sure he is comforted by the fact that his co-star will be a familiar one, Richard Griffiths, who also plays Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter series.
Although everyone will be eagerly awaiting the scene where Daniel Radcliffe will don his birthday suit, this psychological thriller of a play is brilliant in its unearthing of the reasons behind a baffling incident where a stable hand, who adores horses, blinds six of them with a hoof pick in a seemingly random act of violence.
The play will open on 27 February 2007 at the Gielgud Theater in London’s world famous West End. Ticket prices range from 19.50 pounds to 49.50 pounds (I think the peso to pound exchange rate is pretty high).

Daniel Radcliffe on nudity in his Telegraph interview:
“I didn’t look at the nudity and go, oh great. But it’s the same as doing a role with an accent or a particular affectation. You look at the character first. Lots of the actors that I’ve admired have at one stage or another taken their kit off. It’s a rite of passage. That iconic scene is the physical and emotional climax of the play. So if I do that with pants on, it would be crap.”

It’s so interesting to note that Dan’s coming of age is being done in the “traditional” way for a female actor, i.e. a more adult role that requires some nudity.

Good for him, I must say!
