Starbucks Supervisor Makes A Face (Ire)

Starbucks Harbour Square Mall Manila Bay ViewSupervisor Rolly delivered an order of hot peppermint mocha to my table in Starbucks Harbour Square Mall on 17 January 2007. However, my ignorance of the contents of the hot peppermint mocha drink made me unable to give the extra instruction not to include the whipped crème.

I apologized and requested Supervisor Rolly to please remove the whipped crème. (I have made the same mistake with other drinks before and never had a problem when I made the request. Assiduously, I would avoid making the same mistake because it does cause unnecessary wastage.)

To my shock, a flicker of annoyance flitted across his face.

Upon his return, I instructed him sternly not to make a face when a client makes a request. Supervisor Rolly immediately gave a big smile and tried to excuse himself by saying that he was just in a hurry.

Disbelieving him, nevertheless, I reminded him that his actions could be misinterpreted.

But it seems a guilty conscience will motivate him to approach me repeatedly as I ate my breakfast.

First, instead of the cashier, Supervisor Rolly was the one who informed me they’re preparing my credit card cancellation, because, until I pointed it out, the cashier forgot to give me the Php 5 discount for using a Starbucks coffee tumbler, which also happened the day before in the same Starbucks Harbour Square Mall branch.

Second, Supervisor Rolly came over to invite me to a coffee seminar in the Starbucks Harbour Square Mall branch on 23 January 2007 5-6pm.

I took pity on him, and so, to ease his conscience, chatted about the beautiful view of Manila Bay, which can be easily seen whether you’re inside or outside the Starbucks Harbour Square Mall branch.

Thanks France. I’m sure this incident is an exception (fingers crossed). And to his credit, he did try to make amends. Several attempts in fact that I was the one who got overwhelmed.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe what you thought was a look of annoyance wasn’t really one and at or that he wasn’t feeling guilty, but instead was trying to head off a possible incident from an over-sensitive customer? How gracious of you to “take pity on him and ease his conscience” and then post his name on a public forum. Aren’t there more important things in the world you could concern yourself with?
