Traditional Latin Mass Schedule at Our Lady of Victories Church

Traditional Latin Mass at Our Lady of Victories Church ScheduleFor a change, celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception the traditional way by attending a High Mass at Our Lady of Victories Church.

A High Mass implies that the priest will be singing or chanting the words in Latin, while having his back predominantly turned towards the congregation as he faces the altar where the Blessed Sacrament is. A High Mass is usually celebrated during special days of the Catholic Church year such as today, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, or Christmas and Easter.

The Excommunication Be forewarned that in their zest to keep the traditional Latin Mass alive and to defy the changes instituted by the mandates of the Vatican II, the Society of St. Pious X, who is in charge of Our Lady of Victories Church, was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church in the 1960s.

It is only recently that fences have been mended and the Society of St. Pious X has applied to be accepted back into the fold of the Roman Catholic Church.

Dress Code The Our Lady of Victories Church follows the traditional dress code during the Latin Mass.

Specifically, the females must wear a dress or a skirt and blouse with short or long sleeves PLUS a veil. The veil can be any piece of cloth that covers the head. There are a few veils at the church entrance that may be worn and borrowed by anybody, but they are limited in number.

The dress code for the males follows the same vein in the sense that they must wear pants and a short or long sleeved shirt.

The Traditional Latin Mass Schedule The High Mass, where portions of the Mass are chanted and sung in Latin, is only celebrated during special days (e.g. Christmas), the First Friday 6.30pm Mass and the weekly Sunday 9am Mass.

Otherwise, the Monday to Saturday 7.15am and 6.30pm Mass, and the Sunday 11am and 6pm Mass are the Low Mass, but still in Latin.

Mass Missals Not to worry, the Our Lady of Victories Church has a bookstore that sells Mass Missals so that the churchgoers can follow the Mass proceedings by reading a vernacular translation of the Latin. But the purchase is not necessary either. One or two attendees will usually know the cues of when to stand or kneel.

Minimal Verbal Responses and Kneeling Galore The traditional Latin Mass is designed for minimal verbal audience participation so hardly any responses will be required.

But there will be lots of kneeling. From the First Reading to the lengthy and extended Blessing of the Sacrament you will be on your knees on the cushioned kneeling benches that, nevertheless, can be very painful for the uninitiated (like me).

The Communion As you kneel in the benches near the altar to receive Holy Communion, an additional step is required. You must insert your hands under the cloth that covers the kneeling benches.

The Society of St. Pius X was never excommunicated. Only persons are excommunicated in 1988 PP John Paul II declared that Archbishop Lefevbre and the Four Bishops he ordained without mandate and Bishop Castro-Meyer from Campos Brazil have incurred excommunication. Meaning, by their very act they have excommunicated themselves from the Church.
