Lord of the Rings Director Cheated of $100M

Boycott New Line CinemaPeter Jackson, the man at the helm of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has earned for New Line Cinema, and, ultimately, Time Warner, billions of dollars.

Now, in an underhanded attempt to earn even more, New Line has allegedly employed tricky business practices to escape the payment clause that is owed Peter Jackson. His lawyers estimate that Peter Jackson should have earned approximately $100M for his work.

From a short term point of view, this might have seemed like a good move for New Line and Time Warner, but, from a visionary long term point of view, this is a very costly mistake because they have just lost billions of dollars that they could have earned from the future works of Peter Jackson.

The Hobbit, for one. In a clear move to try and force Peter Jackson to direct The Hobbit and another Lord of the Rings prequel, BBC reported that “the Oscar-winning director said New Line would not allow him to make the films unless he dropped the lawsuit.” Peter Jackson has wisely decided not to direct the films.

All The Lord of the Rings and/or Peter Jackson fans are encouraged to Boycott New Line. The website asks fans “to boycott all New Line Cinema products of any kind until New Line Cinema resolves the LOTR profits dispute with Peter Jackson, nor go to any new New Line movies nor buy or rent any New Line DVD.”

This means not watching Kate Winslet in the movie Little Children, Jack Black in Tenacious D: In the Pick of Destiny or Keisha Castle-Hughes in The Nativity.

But I say, take it a step further, try to boycott as many Time Warner products that you can. Since New Line Cinema is owned by Time Warner, I’m sure the Time Warner bigwigs knew about the anti-Peter Jackson move.

I didn’t say all Time Warner products, just as much as you can. I would be the first to say I can’t because Time Warner owns the Harry Potter films, and I adore JK Rowling so I can’t promise that.

But aside from Harry Potter, and, of course, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I’m pretty lukewarm about everything else so I’ll think two, three or four times whether to watch, own or rent any Warner Brothers, AOL, HBO, Sports Illustrated or Time magazine product.

Time Warner and New Line got more money by stealing from a man who gave his life blood in order to make The Lord of the Rings, well, they’re going to get less of my money.

TheOneRing reports that Lord of the Rings author Lynnette Porter commented, “If The Hobbit is to be filmed, it must be a high-quality, as-faithful-as-possible adaptation. Tolkien fans expect that level of quality—and commitment from the entire creative team involved in the film project. I believe that Peter Jackson is best qualified to provide both.”
