The Art Bell Hate Email Hoax

It must be the third or fourth time I’ve received this email over the years, purportedly written by “Art Bell, a radio talk show host in Nevada. Here is yet another person who has taken advantage of his power and privilege to use hateful words and racial stereotypes that breed further ignorance and intolerance in our society.”

Hate Email Excerpt Allegedly, Mr. Art Bell wrote an email, an excerpt of which is, “Please recognize your ROOTS! You come from the Third World! You country is a disgusting and filthy place. Most people there live in poverty! Your culture has MUCH MORE SPANISH influence than Chinese, and absolutely no JAPANESE influence whatsoever. People in Japan and China do not act like you. They do not constantly talk about sex and they have a MUCH HIGHER level of RESPECT for each other. There is NO WAY that you can connect yourself to Asia other than location.”

My Reaction It always struck me as highly improbable that any media personality would write such a diatribe so after the repeated receipt of this email I finally satisfied my curiosity and looked it up.

Sent Email Here’s the email that I sent:

Guys,

Here are a couple of links that offer another perspective on the situation.

But it might interest you to know that Art Bell is married to a Filipina, and this email has been proven to be a hoax.

Wikipedia

“The Philippine Daily Inquirer printed a letter found
on a web page purportedly from Bell that made
derogatory statements about Filipinos. This letter was
subsequently demonstrated to be a hateful hoax
perpetrated upon Bell, who in fact had a publicly
loving relationship with his Filipina wife, and who
often spoke openly about his admiration for the
Filipino people on his radio show. Subsequently, the
Philippine Daily Inquirer printed a retraction and
apologized for printing the statement upon their
verification of the hoax. This fraudulent act upon
Bell still periodically results in serious threats to
Bell when this scurrilous material surfaces from time
to time.”

Who2 Website

“Bell did not make a broadcast calling the Philippines
“a disgusting and filthy place.” A false e-mail
recounting his alleged remarks has been circulating
online since the 1990s. In 2001 Bell sued the
Philippine Daily Inquirer after the newspaper
published the e-mail as fact; the Inquirer published a
retraction and apologized to Bell… In 2001 Bell
started his own radio station in Pahrump, KNYE 95.1
FM, playing primarily music.”

Live in peace and harmony,
Lorna Lopez
