Chuckles — Break a Leg Origins

After the customary pep talk to my cast before the show, I said the traditional “good luck” theatre saying of Break a Leg as a means of wishing everybody well. Barely have I finished saying it when Playshop Kid Ruiz (youngest brother of Playshop Kids Marek and Enzo) proclaimed, “I know where you got Break a Leg!”

A warm feeling stole over me with the thought that such a young child is so well steeped in theatre traditions, so I inquired genially, “So from where did I get Break a Leg?”

He announced triumphantly, “From Disney’s High School Musical!”

My eyebrows met in a mock angry face as I protested, “It did NOT come from Disney’s High School Musical!” Then I turned to the parents and scolded them, “You should teach them theatre traditions!”

Ruiz’s mother laughingly replied, “We don’t know them ourselves.”
