Chuckles — Dr. Doolittle Bhutan Style
My friend was recounting her travels to the Kingdom of Bhutan, a country nestling between India and Tibet, and how the respect for all forms of life is a prevalent part of the Bhutanese’s lives since majority are devout Buddhists. Indeed, the Bhutanese have “inculcated deeply the value that all forms of sentient life, not just human life, are precious and sacred.†This overwhelming belief was demonstrated in a simple incident that my friend personally witnessed.
While they were eating in a restaurant, a fly, for some unknown reason, just fell on the table. Their Bhutanese guide became distressed and started muttering, while intermittently blowing gently on the fly.
Nonplussed but interested in the small drama unfolding before their eyes, my friend was reminded of the scene in the Dr. Doolittle 2 movie where actor Eddie Murphy gave artificial respiration to a rat by blowing directly into the rat’s mouth . She felt that if it had been possible, their Bhutanese guide would have done the same, but the physical disparity just made it out of the question.
Well, if I ever go to Bhutan, I have to control my fly, mosquito and cockroach killing tendencies.
