Trumpets Joseph the Dreamer with Franco Laurel

(left) Pam Gumabon and (right) Franco LaurelFranco Laurel steps into the role that famous thespian Audie Gemora and bestselling artist Gary Valenciano have essayed onstage, and makes it his own in a dazzling debut as Joseph in Trumpets Joseph the Dreamer at Megamall Cinema 4 last 31 August 2006.

Written and directed by Freddie Santos, the updated compact version of the Trumpets classic is geared towards school audiences, and thus, has been shortened to approximately an hour and a half of emotional upheaval as the well loved Biblical story unfolds of how a young man named Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers, yet somehow rises to become one of the world’s most powerful men, and then, when given the opportunity, forgives his brothers instead of punishing them severely.

Hip hop, zipping and gymnastic moves, choreographed by Chinie Nepomuceno, and musical arrangement that reflects present day sounds, as accomplished by Carlo Bulahan, will surely draw in the young spectators, but it will be the captivating story itself about the universal lessons of forgiveness and redemption that will capture their hearts and minds.

Franco Laurel, who alternates with Trumpets president Alvin de la Pena, shines brilliantly as Joseph, his boyish looks perfectly charming, but it is his emotional depth that makes him so engaging, as he will surely elicit both laughter and tears from the play’s viewers.

Pam Gumabon, alternating with Ems Bolanos as Mrs. Potiphar, is delightfully wicked with her Rosie Perez depiction of a determined woman who is used to getting her own way. Ring Antonio as Momma and Ashley Imler as Arsenath, Joseph’s wife, were standouts in their vocal solos. Cairo, who plays the young son of Joseph, stole the show from the adults as he wowed everybody with his hip hop moves.

Franco Laurel with the male actors of the Joseph the Dreamer CastThe 20 member cast must be lauded for taking on the show’s challenge of multiple roles that requires speedy costume changes and leaves them with hardly any time to rest.

Trumpets will surely have the scoresheets. Why don’t you call the numbers above and ask about the fees? But, as far as I know, the Joseph the Dreamer music sheets have not yet been released to the public.
