Stephen King and John Irving Join Clamor for Harry Potter Survival
In an ironic turn of events, authors Stephen King and John Irving, whose works are detailed with horror, death and the bizarre, have publicly stated that they hope JK Rowling will let Harry Potter live.
USA Today reported that John Irving said, “I have my fingers crossed for Harry,” while Stephen King declared, “I just don’t want him to go over Reichenbach Falls,” alluding to the way Sherlock Holmes, another literary character, met his untimely demise.
The three authors banded together for a wonderful night of readings, music and videos entitled, “An Evening with Harry, Carrie and Garp,†last 1 and 2 August 2006 at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Tickets, ranging from $12.50 to $100, were sold to benefit two organizations, The Haven Foundation and Doctors without Borders.
Included is a “Family Package†worth $1,000 that includes 4 Premium Orchestra seats worth $400 and 3 signed books, one from each author. Every ticket buyer also had the opportunity to send via email a question that may be answered during the Question and Answer Portion.
J.K. Rowling’s appearance in the benefit is her first visit in the USA after a six year absence. Remaining tight lipped as ever about her work, she did give this clue and lays to rest any speculation that it might be Hermione Granger or Ron Weasley that she was referring to when she said two characters die in the seventh book, “Harry is not completely alone [for] he still has his two faithful sidekicks.”
And she had this to say about writing the last installment, “I feel quite liberated. I can resolve the story now and it’s fun in a way it wasn’t before because finally I’ve reached my resolution, and I think some people will loathe it and some people will love it, but that’s how it should be.”
