Chuckles — Sukob with Kris Aquino and Claudine Barretto

Kris Aquino and Claudine BarretoAs the film ‘Sukob’ began in Gateway Mall with the camera panning the old houses, I suddenly had an inkling that the movie starring Kris Aquino and Claudine Barretto might not be the romantic drama that I expected.

I whispered to my companion, “Doesn’t ‘sukob’ mean to go under the umbrella when it’s raining very hard?”

My friend whispered back, “Yes, but it can also refer to the superstition of not getting married when somebody just died or two siblings can’t get married in the same year.”

I nodded slowly, and as the eerie images combined with the ominous music, I whispered again, “Is this a scary movie?”

My friend looked at me, partly in shock, and said, “Yes. Didn’t you know?”

“Uhm… No.” And that’s what happens when one is not so familiar with some familiar Filipino terms.
