Chuckles — Sukob with Kris Aquino and Claudine Barretto
As the film ‘Sukob’ began in Gateway Mall with the camera panning the old houses, I suddenly had an inkling that the movie starring Kris Aquino and Claudine Barretto might not be the romantic drama that I expected.
I whispered to my companion, “Doesn’t ‘sukob’ mean to go under the umbrella when it’s raining very hard?â€
My friend whispered back, “Yes, but it can also refer to the superstition of not getting married when somebody just died or two siblings can’t get married in the same year.â€
I nodded slowly, and as the eerie images combined with the ominous music, I whispered again, “Is this a scary movie?â€
My friend looked at me, partly in shock, and said, “Yes. Didn’t you know?â€
“Uhm… No.†And that’s what happens when one is not so familiar with some familiar Filipino terms.
