Lady in the Water Movie
New Talents Humor. Acting. M Night Shyamalan is growing and it’s showing through new aspects in his currently showing film Lady in the Water.
I found myself giggling at lines that were obviously meant to elicit laughter, a dangerous and risky choice, since they occurred during the escalating periods of fear and tension in the movie.
Night has shown this predilection in his previous movies, but only in glimpses, never as full blown as it is now. I think we have to expect more of this delightful trend.
And since Night has decided to give himself another meaty role (even longer screen time than his character in Signs), I was relieved to see that his acting has improved tremendously.
A Foundation in Theatre The film also appealed to me because it has the feel of a play, and my impression was confirmed when I read up on the movie. Paul Giamatti reported that they had a lot of rehearsals, which helped him a lot in putting details into his character.
Furthermore, M Night Shyamalan declared, “Because my movies are a lot like plays, I hire only theatrical actors, especially on this one, only theatrical actors, and they did it like a play. They were amazing.”
The choice of Bryce Dallas Howard then becomes a wise decision, for her brilliance and natural talents were honed in New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Drama (2003). Bryce also studied further with the highly regarded Steppenwolf training program. That her father is the famous actor-director Ron Howard is just an interesting tidbit of a powerhouse female actor.
