Chuckles — The Origins of the African Crowned Crane
During a recent trip to Avilon Zoo in Montalban Rizal, our tour guide, Cris, identified all the animals that we were viewing.
As we came upon one cage, she called out to a bird that was 20 feet away, and when the magnificent specimen came close, she announced, “And this is the African Crowned Crane.”
Catching only the word crane and remembering the beautiful but tragic Japanese folktale of The Crane Wife, I eagerly exclaimed, “You mean this crane is from Japan?”
Nonplussed, our guide gently replied, “Like I said, this is the African Crowned Crane.”
As my companions saw my chagrin, they released the laughter they were trying to contain.
