Chuckles — The Da Vinci Code Corruption of the English Language
The members of the Malaysian Linguistic Association are up in arms over Ron Howard’s film The Da Vinci Code starring Tom Hanks. Declared by Ambi Mohan, president of the Malaysian Linguistic Association, “…we have decided that enough’s enough. The Da Vinci Code should be banned because we don’t want to encourage youngsters to use ‘da’ as a lazy shorthand for ‘the.’ We see this in rap lyrics.”
Mr. Mohan muses that he may be willing to drop any more protests if the film’s title is changed to The The Vinci Code. But he seems to be of two minds because he thinks that having “two ‘thes’ in a row look ugly.” He concluded, “So the film should be called The Vinci Code.”
Maybe somebody should inform Mr. Mohan that Leonardo Da Vinci might protest over the change of his last name from Da Vinci to just Vinci, for Da Vinci is an illustrious name that has been associated with all the triumphs of the Renaissance era, and has long been admired as it connotes a real genius of a man who has dabbled, not only in painting, but also in astronomy, anatomy, architecture, botany, music and engineering.
