Janet Jackson Appeal to Lift Fine for Breast Exposure Denied
01 February 2004 went down into history as Nipplegate, the moment when Janet Jackson’s right breast was briefly exposed during her duet with Justin Timberlake at the MTV produced half-time show of Superbowl.
As Justin sang the lyrics, “I’m gonna have you naked by the end of this song,” he reached up with his left hand and ripped off the right side of her bustier, baring Janet Jackson’s breast that only had a nipple shield as its cover.
According to CNN, Jackson spokesman Stephen Huvane said the incident “was a malfunction of the wardrobe; it was not intentional. … He was supposed to pull away the bustier and leave the red-lace bra.”
Federal Communications Commission subsequently fined all the CBS stations that aired the Superbowl, which equaled to $550,000, a paltry amount compared to the $2.3 million per 30-second commercial that CBS charged during the famous football game.
However, CBS is staunchly defending its stand and “continue[s] to disagree with the FCC’s finding that the broadcast was legally indecent.”
