Additional 48 MRT Trains Soon to Ply the EDSA Route

MRT CardAccording to an article by Daxim I. Lucas in the Philippine Daily Inquirer last 19 May 2006, a total of 48 second-hand trains will be donated by the city government of Vienna, Austria to the Philippines, specifically to aid in the government’s MRT expansion program.

I am inwardly jumping up and down with joy at the thought of 48, again 48!, more trains to ply the EDSA route, which is easily the most utilized of all the lines, as compared to the LRT 1 & LRT 2 lines. Maybe my dream of having a 24-hour train ride available will soon be realized too (in the wee morning hours the trains can come every 30 minutes or so).

Increase in Number of Commuters

With the escalating fuel prices, I am so relieved and happy that I made the decision to mix public and private transportation as my means of going around. And I’m not alone in this decision.

Mr. Lucas reported that there has been an increase of 11% in the number of MRT commuters during the first quarter of 2006 as compared to the same period last year, while the LRT reported a whopping 34% increase! I’m sure the numbers are going to go higher.

I think Japan also donated trains to the LRT 1 line. The trains can be easily spotted because of the shiny silver metal body. On the inside there are logos of the Japan Official Development Assistance
