How to Lower Your MRT or LRT Expenses

Estimating the Fare Otherwise, to estimate the fare, just remember that an additional peso is added to the minimum fare after every 2-3 stations. The station you boarded from will count as station No. 1.

So, if I boarded at the Quezon Ave. MRT station, that will be station No. 1. The Kamuning station will be Station No. 2, and Cubao will be Station No. 3. If I alight at either Santolan or Ortigas, the fare will increase from Php 10 to Php 11.

The minimum fare for the MRT is Php 10, while it’s Php 12 for the LRT 1 & 2.

Marking the Purchase Date The purpose of marking the purchase date is just to make sure you use the card before it expires at 3 months (MRT) or 6 months (LRT). Sometimes an expired LRT 1 card can pass (which happened to me), but an expired MRT card can be detected (which happened indirectly to me because I gave my bonus ride to a friend not knowing the card had already expired).

To avoid the 1 month deadline for using a new card, use it immediately.

Time Savings Aside from savings money-wise, having an extra card on hand will also save you time, because if you’re with someone that you have to wait for to buy a card, then you can generously offer to treat that person with your bonus ride.

Do It For Fun Do this MO only if you find it fun, like, I just get this gleeful feeling whenever I have an ending balance of Php 1. Babaw, but true. ;-)

Or you can apply for a Flash Pass and enjoy unlimited rides for P 250 a week. That is, if you ride the trains (better if TWO lines) on a daily basis.
