Zsazsa Zaturnnah Extended

I literally couldn’t get in to watch this show because it was a full house each time, and, even if I were willing to pay for tickets, there were no tickets available.

I think I’m one of the people that Tanghalang Pilipino and the Bright Eyed Boys Events and Ideas Inc. took pity on because they have pooled their efforts to bring back the hit musical this summer, specifically, April 21 to 30 of 2006, with matinees at 2.30pm (Sat/Sun) and evening shows at 7.30pm (Fri/Sat/Sun), at the PETA Theater Center at #5 Sunny Side Drive, Bgy., Kristong Hari, Quezon City (I think this is near Quezon City Sports Club). So aside from being entertained by a hit musical, you will get the chance to marvel at the new PETA Theater Center (PETA was previously based in the open theater of Fort Santiago).

Zsazsa Zaturnnah is the name of the female superhero character a gay character, Ada, turns into when he swallows a larger than fist stone and defends his provincial town from a giant frog, zombies and aliens, while being hopelessly and secretly in love with Dodong, whom he feels can never love him back, and all the while ably supported by a hilarious sidekick named Didi.

Sounds like Darna? In an interview, Carlo Vergara, the writer and artist, says it wasn’t a deliberate choice, but something that grew from a basic concept. Although the homosexual themes of the story are very strong, this story is about gender equality, and I am so very excited to see that Carlo’s work was picked up for a theatre production. And there are talks of it becoming a film as well.

The original cast, which includes Eula Valdes and Agot Isidro, believes in the project so much that they have fixed their schedules to accommodate the reruns of the Zsazsa Zaturnnah show.
