The Movie Mobile Phone Conversation (Ire)
Phone etiquette requires that all mobile phones inside the theater be put on silent mode, and, by implication, all mobile phone calls be rejected or taken outside. So when the delightful Emma Thompson script of Nanny McPhee was interrupted by the ringing of a mobile phone I was a tad irritated.
Now, if the recipient would answer to say he’s watching a movie and will call back later, it can be forgiven. However, when it goes beyond this standard conversation, I consider it unacceptable.
A tap of Nanny McPhee’s magical cane would have easily settled the matter by sticking the tongue of the loudly talking person to the roof of her mouth, but, since it was more urgently being used to teach seven unruly children five very important lessons, this matter had to be settled in mundane human ways.
Unfortunately, there was no usher on hand to handle the matter, and, since I wasn’t about to vacate my seat to look for one, I merely said, “Excuse me,” hoping the person would take the hint, but, unfortunately, chose to ignore.
A couple of additional “Excuse me” didn’t chink the armor of the determinedly talking female either. But, as Nanny McPhee kept saying, “Think, you’re very clever,” I chose to take it to heart to come up with a brilliant idea.
How do I tell the loud-mouthed person to stop talking without making any additional noise? It must be done silently, but I’m sure she doesn’t understand sign language, and, for that matter, neither do I, so it’s a moot point.
But wait! She must know how to read, therefore, I can write a message on my own mobile phone to tell her my request.
So, I hurriedly wrote, “Excuse me, can you please take your call outside? Thank you.” (Courtesies must be observed. There’s no need to be rude to a rude person.)
And, to observe personal space, but at the same time making sure she could see it, I held the mobile phone about a couple of feet away from her head on a diagonal angle.
She read it and held up a hand to motion for me to wait, which I was only prepared to do for a few seconds before writing another message.
Thankfully, though, she ended her long-winded conversation and was silent for the rest of the film.
