King Kong and Narnia Win Oscars
The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe bagged the Achievement in Makeup Oscar, besting over Star Wars and Cinderella Man; then lost most of the technical awards to King Kong in the categories that both films were nominated in, namely, Achievement in Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.
A bit of trivia here, but when Douglas Gresham, the stepson of C.S. Lewis, got the news about the 3 nominations for the Narnia films, a fellow hag (from the Trumpets musical), in the form of Mayen Bustamante-Cadd, was in the vicinity. She, who had kept in touch with Douglas through email, was fortuitously visiting him at that time in his manor in Ireland. You can read the full account of her visit in The Philippine Order of Narnians.
Also, it was very nice to see the WETA people, the same team that did the special effects and sounds of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, go onstage to receive Oscars for King Kong, shades of the pleasant past, so to speak.
Aside from winning for Achievement in Sound Mixing and Visual Effects, the King Kong team won also for Sound Editing.
I really appreciated the fact that the King Kong team had already talked amongst themselves regarding the acceptance speeches in the event that they won, because they made sure that each team member had the opportunity to speak on the mike, unlike the other Oscar winners.
And, if only one spoke, it was obviously previously arranged with his associates because they stood quietly by the side, with no jockeying to get to the mike.
There was even one instance at the end of one acceptance speech that the whole team suddenly said a Maori, I believe, expression, complete with movements. Coolness…
