Sun Fails NTC Standards
The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) held a test from 17-28 October 2005 to find out if the three existing networks—Globe, Smart and Sun—pass the 93% standard requirement for Call Setup Success Rate (CSSR). Both Globe and Smart passed with flying colors at 98.5% and 97.2% respectively, while Sun failed at a dismal rate of 66.6%.
The failure of Sun is not surprising, because from my personal experience, you have to be ready to keep redialing before you get through.
Why do people put up with it?
The price.
Consider this. For Php 11.67/day (based on Sun’s month long Php 350 unlimited call and text card) you can call and text all you want to other Sun SIM holders.
For love struck couples or family members, this can be really helpful, especially since chatting on the phone and texting daily are the norm. For urgent business calls, however, Globe or Smart would be more suitable.
Jerry Liao’s Digital Citizens column in Bulletin Today last 08 February 2006 raised the question about what is NTC doing about the fact that Sun obviously does not meet the standards they’ve set.
In response to last year’s petition by Globe and Smart to close down Sun’s operations for failure to meet NTC standards, NTC said, “The popularity of the new and innovative price plans reflect the appreciation that consumers have options that enable them to shop for and choose the price-quality package that best suit their needs.”
