Elorde Boxing Gym

Elai SantiagoIf you want to feel like Rocky or Hillary Swank’s character in Million Dollar Baby, head on over to the Elorde Boxing Gym in Quezon City (between the Greenhills and New Manila areas). Ms. Elai Santiago gamely showed the boxing moves that every participant is supposed to learn, and she informed me that during the peak hours of 5-8pm, the gym is filled with, surprise, women (about 75%). It seems the sport has caught on with its cardiovascular and interval training benefits.

Hand Wraps Hand Wraps- It’s necessary to bind your hands with hand wraps for protection, since the power and intensity of the workout may lead to some bruising, and even blisters, if you’re not careful.
Speed Ball Speed Ball- After a 10-15 minute warm-up of jumping rope, running and stretching. the workout usually begins with a couple of rounds with the speed ball.
Punching Mitts Punching Mitts- The trainer gives a series of combinations that you’re supposed to do. Add some footwork, and you’ll be huffing and puffing in no time.
Punching the Two End Ball Punching the Two End Ball- The Two End Ball is up next, and, although there’s less footwork, it can still be taxing, especially on the arms.
The Punching Bag The Punching Bag- After a couple of rounds with the mitts, it’s now time for the classic punching bag routine (that’s a picture of the famous Elorde himself hanging on the wall).

A greater part of the workout is interval training, i.e., alternating the mitt workout with the balls and punch bag. The latter part is a killer abs workout (something like 500!?! reps), and ends with a stretch and a short massage from your trainer.

Hi. I came across this page as I was searching for the Elorde thing. Hehe… I am so interested to try boxing. :-)
Are you going there, too? Actually, I don’t have friends who go there, or into boxing at least. Wouldn’t I feel uncomfy?
Hope you could give some tips as I am trying to make my way to try this new thing out. :-) Thanks.

    Hi Gie,

As of the moment, I haven’t added boxing at Elorde to my fitness routine. I will eventually. Hehe…

Regarding whether you would feel uncomfortable, let me reassure you that from what I’ve seen, the trainers are very well trained in being professional, so they try to make their behavior impeccable, like making sure to keep a certain level of distance from the client to respect personal space and avoiding sexist remarks. I think that’s why so many girls feel encouraged to attend.

Plus, the trainers do adjust the workout to the client’s fitness level. Like, when I went to observe, Elai (the girl in the pics) did a more difficult workout from my other friend who was doing it for the first time.

To lessen the discomfort factor, why don’t you go during the peak hours of 5-8pm so that you’ll see lots of other girls, and maybe even find a boxing buddy?

    Go for it! Lorna :-)

Good day. I’m from Manila and involved in a business. I’m interested in having a boxing workout but I prefer it in the Manila area. Do you have any idea if there are boxing gyms in my area? Thanks!

Gosh, I’m so sorry but I’m not that familiar yet with the Manila boxing gyms. As soon as I hear of a reputable one, I’ll post the details immediately.

    Good luck. Lorna ;-)

Hi. I’m not so sure but I think I passed by another Elorde gym along Araneta Avenue. Will visit it soon to check out the place and rates as I am interested in trying it out too.
    Many thanks.

I heard there is this Elorde Gym in Salcedo Village Makati . Per session rate is Php 200, plus you have to buy gloves worth Php 2800. Haven’t tried it yet. Anybody who tried working out in said gym? How’s the ambiance?

  5. Malou on May 25th, 2006

    Hi All,

I passed by Park Square Makati last week and I saw Elorde Gym. Anybody here knows their contact info and if they are open already? I called this no. 723-8825 mentioned above and inquired, but they are not aware of an Elorde Gym in Makati. Said could be a different owner.

    Thank You,
    Malou

    Hi,

    Good day!

Elorde gym in Makati is in Pasay Road on top of Rapide, beside Ansons, at the back of Max’s, Gulligan’s, North Park etc. in Glorietta.

I just saw their banner when I passed by yesterday. Gym hours are from 7am-9pm. Annual fee of Php 500 and Php 200 per session. To get other info here’s the no. 914.4130.

    Hope this will help,
    Happie

  7. Malou on June 16th, 2006

Thanks Happie :) But couldn’t wait to get the needed info so I walked in at Elorde to inquire, and last Wednesday I just had my second training. I also availed of the 500 pesos annual membership. Everyone here who’s interested I just wanted to let you know that it’s worth trying, and paying the 200 pesos for the workout is worth it because you can only get that kind of training at Elorde.

  8. Bambam on June 21st, 2006

Hi. The green awning along Castillas St. that leads to the second floor entrance of Elorde Boxing Gym has been changed to a bright shade of yellow.

  9. Jay on June 22nd, 2006

I called up the 914.4130 number and the girl said they were located right above Jay-jay’s (not me), which is beside Home Depot on Julia Vargas Ave. in Ortigas Center. They are affiliated with the Makati branch, which does not have a landline yet, so it’s the Ortigas branch’s number printed on the tarpaulin in Makati.

The regular or walk-in rate per session is Php 350, but your first workout will be considered a trial workout, so there’s a discount of Php 150, so you just pay Php 200.

If you pay the annual fee of Php 500, you will be charged Php 200/session instead of the walk in rate of Php 350. The Php 500 annual fee also entitles you to work out in their Makati branch. They are NOT connected with the Elorde Gym in Quezon City.

  14. Elmer on August 22nd, 2006

I’ve been working out at Elorde Gym in Katipunan for 2 months now, and, I can tell you that boxing is a very good cardiovascular workout.

  15. TheBachelorGirl on August 23rd, 2006

    Hi Elmer,

Thanks for the feedback. Can you please share the contact details of the Elorde Katipunan branch? And the rates too? Plus, is there a free trial class? Thanks.

  16. Elmer on August 23rd, 2006

    Hi,
Elorde Gym is located at 216 Katipunan Avenue. It’s near Quirino Medical Center and Katips Bar and Blue Ridge. They charge Php 200 per session. You can call them at 440.3680 and inquire with them if they can give you a free trial workout. You can talk to Edward (he’s my trainor).

  17. TheBachelorGirl on August 23rd, 2006

Thanks so much for the helpful info.

  18. Camille on August 29th, 2006

    Hi there!

I’m a 17 year old girl who wants to try boxing… And a while ago my mom went to Elorde Gym to check it out since we live nearby. She said the place was good… But she was a little worried about the people inside because everyone looked like they are all good boxers already… I’m a newbie… But I wanna learn boxing so I could REALLY LOSE WEIGHT. Is it still advisable for me to enter the gym? Natatakot ako kse baka walang magtiyagang magturo skin dun…

    Have a great day. Thanks!

  19. TheBachelorGirl on August 30th, 2006

Hi Camille. Although it’s a little bit intimidating to be around people who seem to know a lot about boxing, remember that ALL of them were newbies in the beginning.

When I went to observe, I had two friends with me. The one featured in the pics, Elai Santiago, had been at it for months, while the other one came in for a trial class, knowing nothing at all. The instructor was very patient with her and modified the routine to suit her fitness level.

Why don’t you go during the non-peak periods so the gym isn’t so hectic? At the very least, why not go for a trial class, so you know how it feels and have more information before you make a decision? Go for it!

  20. Elmer on August 30th, 2006

    Hi Camille,
There’s no need for you to worry since the trainors at Elorde know what type of boxing routine is suited for you. The trainors are friendly so be free to tell them about your concerns and apprehensions.
Just go for it and enjoy your workout.

  21. Pio on August 30th, 2006

    Hi Nani,

  23. Elmer on September 8th, 2006

    Cams,
I passed by West Avenue Quezon City last Sun and I saw a sign that says Elorde Boxing Gym opening soon. The place used to be Chatterbox Bar and Resto.

  24. Skirtz on September 9th, 2006

  25. TheBachelorGirl on September 9th, 2006

  26. Ryklle on September 10th, 2006

Hi! Can somebody post the contact number of the Elorde Gym in Maceda?! And how can I get there? I’m from Espana and just 16 yo. Tnx!

  27. Ces on September 16th, 2006

Hello! I’m from Davao Oriental and there’s no Elorde Gym here. There’s a boxing gym that has just opened and I really want to try it. Can i box even if I’m asthmatic? My pulmo function test result says I’m normal but I do maintain Symbicort for my asthma. Can you forward your reply to my e-mail too, please? Thank you very much.

  28. TheBachelorGirl on September 17th, 2006

    Hi Ces,

Since boxing is a highly intensive sport, you might experience exercise induced asthma. I think the best person to advice you is your personal doctor. Please ask him or her what precautions you can take.

Plus, if your doctor says yes, make sure to inform your trainer beforehand about your asthmatic condition so that he can adjust the workout or be prepared just in case you do get an asthma attack.

  29. Jiggy on October 11th, 2006

Hi!! Open na ba ang West Avenue branch? Does anyone know their phone number? I really want to try boxing. Takot lang ako baka mahirap at di ko kayanin… Any advice?

  30. windang_girl on October 11th, 2006

Hi! Are there any fat girls in Elorde Boxing? I’m a little concerned and shy about my weight. I am really fat. Are the trainors used to these kind of problems?

  31. TheBachelorGirl on October 12th, 2006

Hey Jiggy, I haven’t passed by West Ave. recently so I don’t know the status of the Elorde Boxing Gym there. Maybe Elmer can help… Elmer, would you know if the Elorde Boxing Gym on West Ave. is open already?

And Windang_girl, although it’s great that you want to work out at Elorde, there are some concerns attached to being overweight like possible hypertension, etc. It’s advisable to consult a physician first before you start working out. That way, when the doctor gives the go signal you can be more confident when you exercise, or have the doctor’s recommendations implemented by the trainer. Nevertheless, it’s great that you’re taking steps to becoming healthier.

  32. Elmer on October 13th, 2006

  50. Annie Capili on October 30th, 2006

hi there, a co-worker of mine would like to try out boxing and has asked me to go with her….can i box with my eyeglasses on? I prefer wearing glasses than contact lenses, thus I’m a little hesitant to say yes. Please advice, thanks….

  51. francis on October 30th, 2006

hindi pala free ang tounement sory.. UKC 111 TIKETS AVAILABLE @ ELORDE gilmore, maceda, and katipunan 4 only 100 pesos.

  52. francis on October 30th, 2006

    Haha..tournament pala..

  53. TheBachelorGirl on October 31st, 2006

    Hi Annie,

That’s true, your glasses might fall off while boxing. But isn’t there this rubber type contraption in sports stores that ties at the ends to keep the eyeglasses in place? Like what professional athletes do except theirs are like goggles. If they’re not available, maybe you can improvise with any stretchable material.

    Any other suggestion anyone?

In general though, I think wearing glasses should not hinder you from trying boxing. Good Luck!

  54. lou on October 31st, 2006

do we have to buy our own gloves?

  55. lou on October 31st, 2006

how much does a pair of gloves cost, by the way?

  56. TheBachelorGirl on November 1st, 2006

    Hi Lou,

Having your own gloves is primarily a hygiene issue. Boxing is a very very very very sweaty workout, sweat that will ultimately be transferred to the gloves, and, if it’s not yours…

So try to get your own pair of gloves. The prices range from Php 300 to the thousands.

If you’re just trying out boxing for the first time, then maybe you can just borrow the gym’s gloves, but if you do like it and plan to continue, it’s probably a good idea to buy your own.

  57. lou on November 2nd, 2006

hi again, do you sell gloves in there? also, there’s an elorde’s gym here in ortigas right? how much per session? is there an annual fee too? i really want to try it…

  58. lou on November 2nd, 2006

never mind… i read through the correspondences above.. julia vargas, home depot, Php 500 for annual fee, Php200 per session.

i think its worth it… im gonna be there soon..

  59. angle on November 5th, 2006

  61. lou on November 8th, 2006

hi there… i work in a call center and my schedule is 1 to 11am. do you think it’s okay to do boxing? i plan to do it after work.

by the way, how long does a session take?

  62. miwi on November 8th, 2006

hi! are there 2 branches of elorde gym in makati? i’ve seen the one near anson’s but would there also be in salcedo village?

thanks! i really want to try this out :o)

  63. TheBachelorGirl on November 8th, 2006

    Hi Lou,

I would think that boxing is perfect for your line of work as a call center agent. You can channel all your anger and frustration from client calls into the boxing.

Boxing will probably keep you sane ;-)

Do take note of the time of your last meal before you work out though. Give your tummy 2-4 hours to digest any meal. Otherwise, you might not feel so good while working out during the one hour session.

And Miwi, so far, no one has written about the Salcedo branch. Anybody out there who has the info? Thanks.

  64. lou on November 9th, 2006

hi. thanks the for the heads up…

will keep all that in mind!

  65. washu on November 9th, 2006

    Hi Bernard,

Napansin ko na wala na yung malaking yellow Elorde sign sa may Gilmore. Inaayos ba ito? Wala lang. Sayang kasi dahil mas madaling makita yung location ng Elorde Gilmore dati nung may Elorde sign. Salamat.

hi just wanna ask by joining Elorde boxing gym, magiging boxer kb dun? or is it purely a workout? kc im interested on becoming a boxer..

  119. Hi! Glad to know of another boxing officionado most especially a lady one. We’ve been in the boxing business when Elorde only had one branch at Sucat year 1999. And by that time we we’re the prime movers Boxing to be taking seriously as an effective Fitness Program. 6years after and 5 branches later Red Corner has evolved. At Red Corner Fitness & Boxing Club around 80% of our clients are women … and services would include UNLIMITED BOXING, MUAY THAI, GROUP EX CLASSES ( Belly dancing, hip hop, punchbag aerobics, capoeira, brazilian jiujitsu etc), WEIGHT TRAINING MACHINES AND CARDIO EQUIPMENT and FREE USE OF SAUNA AND SWIMMING POOL FACILITIES all for a reasonable rate and right in the comfort and safety of HOLIDAY INN GALLERIA MANILA HOTEL in ORTIGAS or HOTEL INTERCON in MAKATI…

HEAD COACH/TRAINER: ROEL VELASCO (Bacelona Olympics Bronze Medalist/ Head Coach Womens RP Boxing Team/ Trainer Mens RP TEAM)

Its scientifically proven that sweating more doesnt result in more calories burned but merely in dehydration… it is all in the intensity of the workout. So you could sweat in comfort and still burn the same amount of calories and attain your training goals for the day.

I hope you could try it out sometime … RED CORNER is a place where people are friends and where Fitness or Fighter Results are Guaranteed … Our doors are always open to welcome anyone who loves boxing! :)

  121. lou on February 15th, 2007

hi there… i have been boxing for 1 month.. i can see there’s a difference in my body mass and i lost 12lbs already. and that’s that. it just stopped there. i cut out some of my bulges but i still think im heavy, are these muscles already?

  122. TheBachelorGirl on February 15th, 2007

12 pounds in 1 month! Congratulations! That’s a total of 42,000 calories burnt (3,500 calories per pound)!

Lots of factors have to be considered in the path of losing weight. Aside from losing pounds, one must also consider the fact that one is going to gain some muscles.

Having more muscles is great because muscles need more energy, which means that you will increase your metabolism and burn more fat and carbohydrates even when you’re not exercising.

If you were measured before you started working out, you can compare the inches you lost aside from the pounds you lost.

However, muscles weigh more so you have to balance the info of pounds lost with inches lost when evaluating your progress.

The initial stage of losing weight is easier than the succeeding months. But remember, the experts say that 1 pound is the recommended amount of weight to be lost per week.

  123. Anthony on February 15th, 2007

Hi there..ask ko lang what are the steps on becoming a professional boxer? saka im almost 20yrs.old..is it too late to be a pro?

  124. francis on February 16th, 2007

    Anthony,

hindi pa late ang age 20. tryout ka sa sparring..tingnan namin kung may potensyal ka sa boxing. i wish sana maging professional boxer ka.. good luck.

effective ba ang once a week na training…?

  126. lou on February 21st, 2007

  132. dyann on February 28th, 2007

hi everybody… i am interested in boxing and muay thai but never tried both. ok din ba ang boxing and muay thai kahit sa mga petite girls? i will call elorde maceda soon. I am so excited..
and this is a very very very good site!!!

  133. Marco McGillis on March 3rd, 2007

No. You don’t need to be a an ABAP (amateur) member to turn pro. If you find a good promoter who sees serious potential, a pro card can be granted, and you can start purse fighting. However the more recommended route is the amateurs. That way you get the fundamentals better and tend to be an all around fighter. Most of the better pros came from the amateur ranks, but there are plenty of exceptions.

And yes Dyann, Martial Arts is for everbody, whethere you’re 3, 8 or 83. You could try Red Corner for Kickboxing and Ju-Jitsu.

I respect Gabriel Elorde and honor his memory as one of my home country’s greatest fighters.

But to be honest, his franchised gyms are not up to par. Boxers are generally taught to slug it out, footwork and accuracy are not emphazised. It’s crowded, with 1 trainer for 3 people. And you honestly get a training program for a California 9th grade PE student.

I suggest Top Contender near the Fort area if you really want to learn how to box without bashing your body unecessarily. There’s a girl I saw who broke her hand on the mitts at one Elorde Branch because the trainer kept slapping the mitts on her.

I came home to Manila and am now training in Cebu. I’m Fil_American, 17, from Rancho Mirage CA, wanting to learn more about our culture, heritage, and why Manny Pacquiao rules!

  134. dyann on March 5th, 2007

    thanks, marco…
the information is very useful. but I am afraid the fort is quite far from my place. I live in manila. ;p

    This is for Fil-Am boy.

Why don’t you try Elorde gilmore and you will know why Elorde is still the best Gym in Manila. You’ve got to try them and I’m sure sasabihin mo na, “Elorde Gym wala kang katulad.” I started boxing at Elorde Boxing gym at gilmore a couple of years ago, and now, “Wow Pare, satisfaction wise dito ka na.”

Some of my friends who used to work out at Red corner are now punching out at Elorde. Kaya kita kita tayo dito.

  138. Geb on March 7th, 2007

Elorde Management is very pleased with the favorable comments all of you have written here. We would like to inform you that we have already opened a branch in Mandaluyong. Its on the second flr, Tiangge Sa Edsa Bldg. corner Libertad and Edsa. Tel 535.1002. We also offer the same rate of 500 pesos annual membership and 200 pesos per session. We have a monthly unlimited of 3000 pesos. Watch out also for our monthly promos.

In addition, we also offer discount for corporate accounts. If you want your employees to enjoy a discounted rate from us, kindly approach any of our staff and give us the contact person so we can give them the proposal. We could do a live demonstration in your company for FREE.

Our other branches: Gilmore ( 723.8825), Katipunan (440.3680) and Maceda-Manila(741.3106). We also have muay thai sessions on a one one one basis as well.

When you enroll at Elorde you get the quality training you deserve. All our trainers came from the Famous and respectable Elorde stable where they are properly trained. Most of them are amateur and professional boxers. So you do get the hard core training.

Remember, Elorde Gym has been there for more than 30 years. Elorde is not just a name, it is already a BRAND PRINT in the arena of boxing. So, why settle for other boxing gyms when you can have the real quality training from Elorde for a minimun fee.

Elorde Boxing gym welcomes everybody who is interested to have a good cardiovascular workout. AT Elorde, you are not just our students.. you are our FAMILY…

    Keep on punching……….

P.S. Marco, we havent had any incident where a female student broke her hand due to the constant slapping of the mitts from a trainer. I assure you, if this happened in any of our branches, we will seriously act on it. I have personally investigated all the 4 branches we have and our staff has denied having such incident. Maybe it happened in other branches which is not ours. Can you tell us which branch it is? thanks

  140. lou on March 8th, 2007

hi there… im enrolled in elorde’s julia vargas, ortigas home depot. why is it their annual fee is twice ur price? also, pwede ba ako transfer if ever?

  141. Elmer on March 8th, 2007

I have been boxing at Elorde Gym Gilmore and at Elorde Katipunan for 2 years now and I can attest that the trainors are all trained professionally. They know what type of Boxing workout is suited for each person.
I dont think the trainors at Elorde would push you to l the limit to the point of breaking your hand or for you to get hurt.
I go there every Saturday and I have attained my goal to enjoy boxing and to lose weight.

  142. Trina on March 8th, 2007

I’ve been going to Elorde Gilmore for about 2 years now since it’s just walking distance from my house. I’ve been having trouble going on a regular basis though since I work in Makati and the commute going to QC can be a nightmare, especially since it’s the rush hour.

I’m really glad that Gilmore extended their Sunday hours so that I can still work out at least 3x a week.

I plan to go tonight. Papahirapan na naman ako ng trainer kong si Rey! Haha.

  143. Paul on March 9th, 2007

Anyone from Elorde West Ave branch?

  144. Geb on March 9th, 2007

Hi Lou, if you plan to transfer to any of our branches (Gilmore, Maceda-Manila, Katipunan and Mandaluyong) we will waive your FIRST year annual membership. You will just pay for your sessions. This privilege is given to all transferees. Plus, if you’re a student/member of our gym, you could workout in any of the 4 branches. Just show your gym ID at the reception.
Thanks and i’ll see you at ELORDE

  148. Dr. She on March 12th, 2007

    Hi Geb,

I’m a member at Gilmore and my trainors are Rey and Roy. They are very good! However, the place is too far from me. I work in Ortigas Ctr. and resides in Makati. I was encouraged by my officemates to try-out and I became to like it… though I travel almost an hour due to trafic along Greenhills… Sana nga sa Julia Vargas kami kaso, maliit daw ang gym don at medyo mahal ng konti…

Our office is moving from Ortigas to Makati, huh, malapit na sa bahay ko kaya lang lalo akong lumayo sa Gilmore… I tried out in Elorde Makati Branch… Got amazed, my ID was not honored there and sad to say, I paid twice the annual membership I paid at Gilmore… 1000 ang annual membership nila, why is that so? Hindi ba isa lang ang Mgt. ng Elorde gym? Liit lang din ng gym nila… daming students and siksikan during peak hours (after office hours)…

Trainors? Pwede na… siguro di lang ako napapatapat sa trainor na tulad ni Rey & Roy… I-compare ba? hehehe… Sorry, I know naman, kanya-kanyang diskarte at style yun ng pagtuturo…

Bottomline, I was just asking for the annual membership, why is it different from other Elorde gym?

  149. Geb on March 12th, 2007

    Hi Dr She,

All the Elorde siblings have the authority to open their gym subject to their own
management, equipment, area size and operation style.

Our group headed by Cucuy Elorde manages the Gilmore, Manila, Katipunan and Mandaluyong and soon to open SM Southmall. If you would notice, our gym is quite large to give the students ample area to jog around for their warmups. We want to give the comfort of space to our students.

All our equipment are imported from the US. Aside from its durability, it is also student friendly when you use them. We also give much importance to the appearance and cleanliness of our bathrooms ( male and female).

Our branches maintain a Php 500 annual membership. We want to keep it this way in order to be affordable by other boxing enthusiasts. Other Elorde gyms, which we don’t manage, can dictate their own fees.

Our group primarily wants to reach out to other students so we really try to make our fees as reasonable as possible. We do make monthly promos as well so as to offer more discounts to our members.

Since your office will be transferring to Makati, may we suggest our mandaluyong branch? It’s in the 2nd Floor of Tiangge sa Edsa Bldg. cor Libertad and Edsa. Tel # 535.1002. If you’re already a member of Gilmore and if your annual fee is still valid, you could definitely use the Mandaluyong facilities. We have equally good trainers there.

If there’s anything we could do to give you a more satisfying workout, feel free to advise us. We are more than willing to listen to your comments

Thanks and see you at Elorde

  150. marie on March 12th, 2007

will there be any plans of opening a branch at the fort?

  151. Elmer on March 13th, 2007

    Geb,
Are there plans for you to open a branch of Elorde Boxing Gym near SM North Edsa Q.C.
I live near SM North but I go every Saturday at Elorde Katipunan for my workout because like what youve said the gym owned by your group is more spacious and airy thats why i like it there. Just asking
    Elmer

  152. sophia on March 14th, 2007

  153. Geb on March 14th, 2007

    Elmer,
As of this time, the SM group would like us to start at SM Southmall. Hopefully, we could expand in other SM outlets in the future. We will keep you informed for other branches that we will open within the year. Remember, all our students may utilize other Elorde branches that we manage for their workout. So it is advisable that you submit your picture once you enroll so we could process your gym ID.
Thanks and see you at the gym
    Geb

I just inquired about the facility in Q.C. I will be living nearby, I think close to Sm Southmall.

Anyway, my question are: Does the gym have other equipment, such as free weights, treadmills, and other equipment not related to boxing? And also how clean are the facilities, such as the dressing rooms, shower heads and that sort of thing. Please let me know. Thanks!
