What’s Up Last Week #19

Philippines is touted as a country that takes Valentine’s Day quite seriously, and has been documented with a high average expenditure on that day. For the male population that’s expected to come up with something to wow their ladies, I’ve combed through the shelves of the Bare Essentials shop for suggestions, and came up with For Him— Naughty Valentine Gifts.

But Valentine’s Day need not be celebrated with the romantic kind of love in mind, as love can be for different kinds, one of the most important being that of friends. So my alternative suggestion is to have friends over and have a chocolate eating party with cakes from Cheap Eats — Chocolat.

With romance in the air, it reminded me of certain authors that I’ve admired, who have somehow brought science fiction, historical and anthropological elements into the romance genre, and how they have kindly answered my “fan” Letters, namely, from Johanna Lindsey, Jean Auel and Iris Johansen.

And time flies by so fast that I can hardly believe that this coming Saturday is already the eve of the Chinese New Year. As I proposed early on, you might want to celebrate at the very popular Binondo Chinese restaurant Cheap Eats — President Restaurant.

Timing is certainly important for magazines’ release, and I’ve certainly been watching out for Working Mom’s December 2005 issue, primarily because I wanted to see if the site was going to be mentioned in an interview that I did for one of its writers (unfortunately, it wasn’t listed).

I mistakenly expected that local magazines were released a month before, similar to their foreign counterparts, or, at the very least, in the early days of its supposed month, like the December issue was going to come out in November or the first few days of December.

But Working Mom’s Dec 2005 - Jan 2006 Issue was available to the public in the last few days of December (according to some), but I found my copy in January after scouring the Mag:net shop in the Eugenio Lopez building, which happened to be in the ABS-CBN compound, an occurrence that I was expecting since the magazine is part of the ABS-CBN publishing family.

Consequently, majority of the magazine’s articles became moot because it concentrated, and rightly so, on Christmas. Of course, the holiday stories are still heartwarming, but the ideas for decorating your room or table, for example, will have to wait for the end of the year.

And, harking back to a Christmas event, Selecta Moo at the Barney Asia Tour 2005, I would just like to share a proud moment for Filipino technical artistry and capability. The Australian team found the set that was constructed here so well done that a majority of it was packed and shipped off to Australia.

Plus, the cast members have expressed how they felt safe using the set, finding it to be sturdy and stable, able to take on most of their pressure and weight while doing their choreography and blocking, unlike their previous experiences in the other countries they have done the show in.

Like I mentioned in What’s Up Last Week #18, the travails of my friend regarding being Charged for Unsubscribed SMS Info was not yet over, for she was Still Charged for Unsubscribed SMS Info (Ire) even after she reported the incident.
