Club Mwah Egyptian Birthday Bash
The glitzy Club Mwah became a veritable den of iniquity on July 18, 2005 with the Egyptian themed birthday bash of Robert Blancaflor.
Before we go any further, may I digress a little bit by admitting, shame-facedly, that I had no idea that the term mwah referred to a kiss? Whenever people sent me a SMS with a mwah I thought they were wailing in some form of protest or something. I think it’s the ‘ah’ part. I envisioned it could only be said as a long keening wail. But then it may be argued that such an assumption would be out of context of the sent SMS. What can I say? I can only blame it on an overactive imagination.
I only mentioned this quirky anecdote because I learned of my ignorance from a Club Mwah press release that was in the Bulletin Today newspaper. So I have a sense of fondness for the place even before I set foot on it. Thanks to Club Mwah, I learned that I was receiving kisses from people; and the knowledge was rather heart-warming.
With the Egyptian theme, no holds were barred to recreate the lavish times of the pharaohs. Receptionists wearing gold dresses and gold snake headdresses met guests. And as guests entered the elevators, they were greeted, or should I say inspected, by Egyptian guards in golden loincloths. When the elevators opened on the third floor where Club Mwah was located, belly dancers led the guests to the lounge areas.
As they passed through a small passageway, guests were treated to the sight of a lounging Cleopatra being fed grapes by her personal ‘slave,’ surrounded by other male ‘slaves’ with writhing pythons around their necks, and female ‘slaves’ calling out greetings to the guests. And the belly dancers proved that they were not just eye candy but they could really do all the hip and belly undulations that belly dancers were famous for.
Eating was a very exciting affair with Cibo serving the appetizers, Via Mare offering the main selections for dinner and topped off by Le Souffle’s desserts. The open bar was a welcome treat, as well as the overflowing wine served from jugs by the waiters, also dressed up as Egyptian ‘slaves.’
The Club Mwah show was an extravaganza that was a feast for the senses. Female impersonators mimicked famous ladies like Liza Minelli and Marilyn Munroe. Recreations were done of famous movie scenes such as Chicago’s “Cell Block Tango” and All that Jazz, with the latter done in black light, making the lurid neon green wigs and “bandage” costumes contrast wonderfully with the performers’ purple bodies. The hour-long show ended with a parade reminiscent of Rio de Janeiro, with the birthday celebrant, Robert Blancaflor, joining the dancers on the float; and the guests were gamely dancing along to form a boisterous conga line.
When I inquired at the reception desk, I learned that watching a show cost P500/pax, while it’s P850/pax for both the show and dinner. You even have a choice as to which show you want to watch. There are three at the moment, namely, Follies de Mwah, Spectaculo and Bedazzled. Shows are from Tuesday to Sunday, with show times ranging from 8:30-11pm.
Pregnant ladies and anybody with a respiratory concern should be forewarned that Club Mwah is located in Mandaluyong, so smoking indoors is allowed. And I would recommend that you sit on the lower lounge areas near the exit, because aside from being so close to all the action, it will also allow you to exit quickly in the event of a fire. The stairs leading down are on both sides of the lobby, but they’re spiral staircases, so I’m sure going down would be quite difficult.
Club Mwah is extremely easy to locate. At the building’s entrance, whirling spotlights shriek “Over here!” And the décor is just so incongruous with its surroundings that it immediately catches your eye. With regards to parking, if you are your own driver, be ready to give up your car keys to the valet. Parking is located in the nearby parking spaces of banks and other businesses, so finding a parking space by yourself can become rather of a bother really.
Club Mwah’s contact numbers are 535-7943 / 532-2826/ 631-6009, while the address is 3rd Floor, The Venue Tower, 652 Boni Ave., Mandaluyong City. Or you can visit their site at www.clubmwah.com
