My Top 5 Favorite Christmas Films

With the Christmas weekend, watching films is a surefire way to feel fuzzy and warm about the holidays. These are the films I wish would be shown on the cable channels during this season (but are not—sigh).

It’s A Wonderful Life A 1947 Christmas classic, this film is like a version of “A Christmas Carol” where James Stewart plays George Bailey, a local boy who decides to stay in his hometown to raise his own family and run his own business. His ideal life is shattered when his business runs into trouble and he decides to commit suicide.

With the help of an angel, he is shown how precious his life is to the town he has helped to prosper, and to his family whose lives would have been so different if he hadn’t been there.

Home Alone The Macaulay Culkin vehicle that propelled him to fame, this charming movie also shows a young boy how his life would be quite dismal without his family, even though they can be quite a pain. In the process, he gets to learn some responsibility like going to the grocery and defending his home from two bumbling burglars.

The Santa Clause Tim Allen of Home Improvement fame stars in his first movie through this Disney film, where he plays a divorced dad who gets custody of his son during Christmas eve, manages to kill Santa Claus, takes over the big guy’s job, and finds out that when he did, he automatically took on the role for the rest of his life. A comedy ensues as he struggles against his fate, and his ex-wife and her husband’s belief that he has gone around the bend.

The Grinch Jim Carrey bravely takes on a classic that’s previously been available in a cartoon version only. Furthermore, he manages to make the heavy costume and makeup come alive as his facial muscles and body strength overcome the physical strictures.

His Grinch is played to the max as he shows how a heart that’s been thought to be non-existent was actually just waiting for the right touch to come alive again. In his case, it was in the form of a little girl from Whoville named Cindy Lou who brings him back into the embracing fold of a town that rejected him in the past.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Christmas and Halloween combine as Jack Skellington, previously in charge of the scary holiday of Halloween decides to take on the joyful celebration of Christmas. When Christmas is almost ruined, Jack realizes that he is more suited for the macabre and his world-weariness languor could be partially alleviated by a new love.
