Testing Positive for Drugs While Applying for My Driver’s License
Aside from being my birthday, the 21st of December holds the dubious distinction as the day I tested positive for drugs when I applied for the renewal of my driver’s license last year.
How did it happen? I totally forgot that I had to renew my license that year, so instead of doing it like a month or so beforehand, I had to rush and do it on my birthday. Unfortunately, I was sick at the time so I was taking a combination of antibiotics, anti-allergy and anti-acids medicine.
The Testing Process I had to divulge if I was taking any medicine during that period so I wrote all the antibiotics and the anti-allergy medicine, but not the anti-acids, because I thought these were the ones that were likely to affect my urine test. Wrong!
What Happens Next? When I tested positive for the drug test, I was informed that my license would be withheld, until they can send my sample to a bigger laboratory where more tests could be done to ascertain what could have caused the tests to be positive.
When the clerk and I were going over my papers, that’s when I found out that a simple anti-acid could have caused the reaction, since it shares a chemical compound that’s akin to shabu.
The Waiting Period Since it was the Christmas season, I requested if they could have the results by the 23rd instead of the one whole week they said it would take. Of course, they couldn’t promise but advised me to call back on that day. Fortunately, they were able to clear my tests speedily so I got my license on the 23rd.
How to Avoid Testing Positive Well, definitely, don’t take any anti-acids. Renew your license way before the deadline, and do it when you’re healthy and not taking any medicine.
