Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Director

The brilliance of Mike Newell’s film, Four Weddings and a Funeral, which caused him to receive a BAFTA Award, the British equivalent of the Oscars, did not, sadly, illuminate his execution of the 4th Harry Potter installment—Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It made me so anxious that I went on the Internet to find out who the director was for the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth part of the Harry Potter series.

His name is David Yates, a 43 year old man who has declared that he has been “hauling in friends and family to star in the little films” he made since he was 14. His knowledge was gained through personal experience, unhampered by any strictures of a film school, and he has immersed himself in Harry Potter’s world by reading JK Rowling’s work earlier this year.

I can only hope that he is going to turn out to be someone like Peter Jackson, the director of the Lord of the Rings, who was first thought to be an ill fitting choice for the trilogy, having made horror flicks before getting the LOTR directorial job, but whose passion for the books proved to be so enormous that the majority, from fans and critics, was pleased with the final work.

In the same way, David Yates is a relative unknown, with mostly television work under his belt, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that his desire to do well and to do justice to the book will enable him to direct a film that is true to the spirit of the magical world of Harry Potter.

Daniel Radcliffe, according to Entertainment Tonight, will begin filming in February 2006 and the film will be released in theaters by the year 2007.
