5 Creative Ways to Use Unlimited SMS

The offer of unlimited SMS from Sun, Smart and Globe has presented a means of reconnecting with people in a very economical way. I have taken advantage of this offer to send SMS to family and friends as a way of keeping in touch or just letting them know that they are being remembered (I know that sounds really cheesy), but instead of sending a generic SMS such as quotes or jokes, why not create one of your own? I have listed below 5 options that you may want to consider:

The Nothing SMS I sent this SMS on the first day I ever got TXT NONSTOP from Globe. There was nothing happening at that time, so I simply wrote, “Hi. This is a text about nothing. Just wanted to let you know that I’m hoping you’re having a fantastic day.”

Apparently, people were not used to a “nothing” SMS, because I got a lot of responses ranging from what a pleasant surprise it was to how sweet, etc.

The Funny SMS It would be nice to send out the gift of laughter, so before I posted Chuckles — The Revenge of the Chicken, it was a condensed 459 character SMS message sent to my friends, especially the male ones, who I assumed would be more appreciative of this type of story.

“The Revenge of the Chicken. We wanted to get a close up view of a tiger in action, so to entice the sleeping giants nearer the jeepney, we bought a trussed chicken as bait from the safari personnel.

As the tiger jumped on the hapless chicken, natural instincts took over. I lowered the camera to see us all splattered with poo, which caused my brother to say dryly, “Well, it seems the chicken had the final revenge. We wanted to see him eaten, and we’re now sprayed with essence of chicken.”

Predictably, the replies were versions of text laughter.

The Picturesque SMS Then there are times when you’re experiencing something so wonderful that you want to share it with others. “Surrounded by Zen rocks as I do yoga sun salutations, feeling the heated water gliding across my skin as I swim in the indoor pool all by myself, floating amidst the frothy bubbles of the jacuzzi, biting into the floss and raisin bread goodies from Breadtalk, lemon grass scented oil being massaged into my skin… :-0”

Of course, I got happy for me responses and some envious ones.

The Woeful SMS And then there was that time when my drug results came out positive while I was applying for my driver’s license (I’ll write about that another time) that I felt compelled to send out a cautionary SMS.

“Warning! Do not drink hyperacidity medicine before taking the urine test for your driver’s license!!! There’s a chemical compound in it that’s the same as shabu. Now I have to wait for more than a week to get my driver’s license. Aaargghh!!! >:-< ”

This is a SMS shouting for sympathy texts, and I got them in droves.

The Excited SMS When I took a joy ride on the three existing rail transit systems, I couldn’t help texting everybody, “Hey, guess what I did today? I rode the MRT all the way to Taft, transferred to the LRT 1, got off to catch the LRT 2 all the way to the terminal station at Santolan! We went around Metro Manila in less than an hour. Hope you do something today for the first time!”

This was a SMS meant to encourage bravery to do something new and to share my excited feelings at the same time. The best response I got was a friend who said I inspired her to text people to do the same thing with her. This was from someone who’s used to private transportation, so going public is a big deal for her.

Yes, we Filipinos are known world wide as heavy senders of SMS, but if it means emotionally connecting with people, then I say defiantly, “Text on!”
