Kenny Rogers Stubborn Counter Girl (Ire)
In the late evening of July 19, 2005, I rushed to the Kenny Rogers branch in Shoemart Cubao to grab some takeout dinner. After perusing the menu intently (I haven’t gone to Kenny Rogers in a while) I went over to the girl behind the glass counter to give my order. When she learned it was take-out, she instructed me to go straight to the cashier at the very end.
I found this instruction absurd because aside from other items, I intended to order the sampler selection, which allows you to choose 3 sampler items, which were on display behind the glass counter together with their respective name cards. The selection of samplers included items such as mushrooms in butter, steamed vegetables, macaroni and cheese, mashed potato, etc. The thought of memorizing the names and then reciting them to the cashier was ridiculous. It was so much easier to just point out the items and to read the names out loud.
All right, what would most probably happen if I went straight to the cashier? I would probably forget the name of the samplers. Can I check the overhead menu for the names? Nope, because they’re not written there. Can I glance over to look at the name cards while I’m ordering? Nope, because there’s approximately an eight-foot gap distance between the cashier and the glass counter where I was standing at the moment. Was it reasonable for them to require me to memorize what I’m going to order? No! It’s late. I’m hungry and tired. And I just want to order and run. Why was she making it so hard for me?
So I ignored the counter girl’s instruction and said what I wanted. She ignored me as well by repeating her instruction to go directly to the cashier. Giving up, I went over to the cashier. As I predicted, my tired brain was mush, so the cashier and I had to go back to the glass counter so I could remember what I wanted. And for those of you who are snickering at my poor memory, please remember that I did intend to order other items, and short-term memory can only hold 7 items.
I explained my dilemma to the manager, Ms. Deth Velasco, and asked if it was company policy for take-out customers to be required to go straight to the counter, or were they allowed to order from the counter people if they wished to? She reassured me that both options were allowed, and promised that said counter girl would be reprimanded.
