Tanghalang Pilipino Auditions for Zsazsa Zaturnnah
Carlo Vergara’s Ang Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsazsa Zaturnnah will be turned into a musical by CCP’s Tanghalang Pilipino on February 2006. This will definitely be one of the highlights of the theatre season.
Zsazsa Zaturnnah is the name of the female superhero character a gay character, Ada, turns into when he swallows a larger than fist stone and defends his provincial town from a giant frog, zombies and aliens, while being hopelessly and secretly in love with Dodong, whom he feels can never love him back, and all the while ably supported by a hilarious sidekick named Didi.
Sounds like Darna? In an interview, Carlo says it wasn’t a deliberate choice, but something that grew from a basic concept. Although the homosexual themes of the story are very strong, this story is about gender equality, and I am so very excited to see that Carlo’s work is being picked up for the theatre. And there are talks of it becoming a film as well.
I have two copies of the comic book, a personal one and another that I purposely lend to as many people as possible, because it will make them laugh (even though they’re straight homophobic males), and plant a seed at the same time (a little bit devious on my part).
And I have copied Tanghalang Pilipino’s announcement for those who are interested in supporting this worthwhile endeavor with their thespian talents.

2. PREFERABLY WITH THEATER EXPERIENCE
3. CAN SING VERY WELL (We mean it!)
4. RESUME WITH 2X2 HEADSHOT (or bigger)
Auditionees must BELT OUT A COMIC RENDITION OF A
SERIOUS SONG (a capella or accompanied by
minus-one/music piece), complete with DANCE STEPS OR
MOVEMENT (Yes, solo production number ito.)
NOTE:
Wearing of costume is strongly encouraged.
