25 Things I’ve Learned Riding the LRT & MRT
1. The end of the card with the hole in it should go in first through the card slot in the turnstiles. Specifically, the hole should be on the upper left corner as you insert the card.
2. I’d rather be squeezed in the MRT than driving thru traffic.
3. It doesn’t hurt that much to be squeezed by the doors shutting down on one of your hapless body limbs, in my case, a protruding elbow.
4. It’s better to wait with a group that’s predominantly female because you’re going to end up being beside them.
5. Putting on deodorant is not an option, it becomes a necessity.
6. The ends of the MRT and LRT 1 cars are good positions to stand in because they’re near the door, they’re good spots to lean on, they provide breathing space and the glass windows allow you to see the direction you’re going.
7. Getting a card may take as long as 20 minutes so better buy a Php 100 card for efficiency and expediency.
8. The balance of your card is shown in the turnstile display when you exit.
9. Both sets of doors on each side open, depending on the station’s design.
10. Standing in front of a waiting group means you’re going to get pushed into the cab, whether you want to or not.
11. The LRT and MRT drivers are assisted by security personnel and/or huge side view mirrors to let them know when to close the doors.
12. Taking a bath to cleanse the sweat and grime from traveling takes on a whole new meaning and level of appreciation.
13. Solitude and space are welcome respites from the crowded terminals and train cars.
14. The cars that are exclusively for women in the LRT 1 may be occupied by males who are accompanying children.
15. It is strongly advisable to bring only 1 bag, preferably thrown across the shoulders, like a body bag, in order to leave your hands free.
16. Some girls are really amazing because they wear heels and open toed sandals, seemingly oblivious to the possible dangers of losing their balance or squashed toes.
17. A lot of people get off at the Araneta-Cubao station.
18. The position of the feet that was taught in Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) training for balance (one foot slightly in front), even while standing sideways, is really a good way to keep yourself steady.
19. It is possible to stand upright without holding on to anything when one is being pressed from all sides.
20. Only the pregnant, the elderly and the physically challenged may use the elevators.
21. The MRT is full most of the time during the day.
22. People need to learn to say, “Excuse me.”
23. More commuters can get in the cabs if people adjusted more towards the center instead of clogging the doors.
24. Those caught with fake DVDs, VCDs or CDs are not allowed to enter the terminal.
25. The LRT 2 is the most fun ride among the three present railway transits.
