Chuckles — Searching for Whales
Arriving in Bais, a place known for its ecotourism that focuses on whale and dolphin sightings, we were disappointed to learn that our timing was a bit off. It would have been better if we had arrived during a full moon, when the lunar activity would have made the seas swell to a deeper level, consequently attracting the whales to pass through the celebrated strait.
Nevertheless, heartfelt prayers and hopeful notions still made us decide to go through with renting a boat and avidly searching the waters for any signs of the famed mammals.
Riding the waves, we were delighted to spot several groups of dolphins frolicking; some even going very near the boat, amazing us with their friendly nature.
Heartened by the sight, I eagerly renewed my whale search, twisting my head back and forth between the right and left sides of the boat, worried enormously that I might miss the gentle mammals.
Seeking reassurance, I turned to the person nearest to me and asked earnestly, “If you were a whale, which side would you prefer, the right or the left?â€
The person concerned flashed me a look of utmost animosity that I realized belatedly that a weight challenged person might not take my innocent query in the kindest light.
