Sbarro Free Coke on Delivery Promo (Ire)

Last July 15, 2005, a friend and I decided to split a whole pizza for take-out from the Sbarro outlet in Megamall. When we were near the counter, he noted from a flyer that Sbarro had a promo– for every whole pizza ordered on delivery, a 1.5 liter of Coke would be given for free. We felt awful that we were ordering take-out instead of delivery.

I requested to speak with the manager and told her our predicament. I informed her that I did understand that it’s a company policy and can’t be changed as of the moment, but I tried to appeal to her sense of justice.

Frankly, she wasn’t really budging so I offered a ‘creative’ solution. My friend and I will go somewhere in the mall where we can wait for the pizza to be delivered, so it can be considered a delivery, and, thus, we’ll have the free Coke. Reluctantly, she agreed.

Although this is an obvious attempt to drive up delivery sales, the decision was obviously arrived at without taking into account the human factor– how the dine-in and take-out consumers will feel at being marginalized by such a promo. I think the cost of losing these same customers will be much higher than the costs of including them in the promo in the first place. I, for one, am not inclined to eat in any Sbarro restaurant any time soon.
