Chatter & Chunter — Britney Spears & JK Rowling, etc.

Britney Spears and JK Rowling The news that Britney Spears gave birth to a baby boy made me remember my sincerest hope that she has an excellent prenuptial agreement. This is Britney’s first baby, while it’s her husband’s third child, the previous two with a former girlfriend, who gave birth to the second child during Britney’s engagement.

Anyway, Britney’s delivery also made me remember that JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, also gave birth earlier this year to her third child. Although she has reassured fans repeatedly how she continues writing despite her burgeoning family, it does make one wonder about the release of the last Harry Potter book, for she has a no deadline agreement with her publishers.

Parking at Shangrila Hotel in Makati for Women Drivers And a friend of mine has told me that Shangrila Hotel in Makati has assigned a number of parking slots near the entrance leading into the hotel for—guess who—women drivers! Half of me am aghast at this sexist move, but at the same time, the other half of me that makes me wear high heels despite the pain and inconvenience is applauding and cheering.

I’m literally torn in half about what to think. Anyway, I’ll add this odd little tidbit to the Free Parking post.

Aggressive Street Urchins At the intersection of EDSA and Shaw Blvd., on that side beside Shangrila Mall, our car was waiting in line to turn into EDSA when a street urchin sidled up to the car and did the requisite request for alms.

Aggravated by his unsuccessful attempts, the child became aggressive in his bid to get money. He started to beat an empty water bottle against the car window, which prompted my sister to reprimand him, to which he belligerently responded, “Bayaran mo ko (Pay me).”

My sibling was understandably incensed at the tactic that bordered on blackmail.

Another version of the same tactic was at the corner of V. Mapa and R. Magsaysay. A street urchin approached my car, and, without asking my permission, began to slather soap liquid on my windshield.

Although I signaled for him to stop, he continued. He also lifted my wiper, which alarmed me, because that meant I would be forced to go out of my car since the suds were completely obscuring my vision. I hastily opened the window a few inches and told him to stop. Thankfully, he did. Moreover, he cleaned away the soap and returned the wiper to its original position.

At least, this particular street urchin was respectful enough to finally accede to my directive, and on his own, was courteous enough to return the car to its original condition, albeit cleaner; but it’s still very disturbing how these children are using these aggressive tactics to force alms out of their targeted prey.

With regards to the Makati Shangri-la Hotel parking slots for women drivers, let’s think of that as perquisites just for being women. It also gives greater security knowing one can access one’s car quickly, be it that she’s a mom with her children or if she’s just out for the evening and is driving alone late at night.

Let’s think of it as the hotel’s way to recognize and respect women’s unique needs.
