Nike Women Tribes Contest Opens at Fitness First Manila

Nike Dancing LogoThe Nike Women Tribes Contest kicked off on 17 September 2005 at Fitness First Manila with 3 tribes contending to be the branch representative to the cluster elimination rounds starting on 30 September 2005.

Presiding over the event was Ms. Peewee Sanchez, the GX Coordinator of Fitness First Manila, who was also part of the panel of 4 judges that afternoon, namely, Frank Drew—National Group Fitness Manager, Jessica Ferrer—Membership Relations Manager of Fitness First Manila, and Arnold Warren—Fitness First Instructor.

The class participants were greeted with the sight of the studio’s front walls covered with Nike’s representation of Tribe—Nothing Matches the Energy You (referring to women) Can Generate as One. Already familiar with the other two emblems emblazoned in all the Fitness First branches, it was fun figuring out these new images (I think it refers to dancing).

Although it started late (after 4:30pm), the Freestyle Step Competition ended early enough to let the Body Jam class start at 5:30pm, followed by Body Combat around 7pm, after which the winners were announced.

I only joined in my favorite class—Body Jam, which also seemed to be the favorite of the Fitness First clients because it had the highest number of attendees. The four judges closely watched, not only the tribes, but the class participants as well.

Aside from the three tribes that participated, an impromptu tribe was established by plucking three females from the crowd and having them also lead a class with the help of an instructor, all without the benefit of rehearsing.

The tracks that were used were from the latest launch, which made it easier to follow, assuming you’ve done the latest Les Mills choreography. However, there was one moment when technical glitches (a skipping CD) broke the class momentum, and the track had to be repeated from the top. Good thing it was one of the earlier tracks, otherwise, it would have been so much harder getting back in the groove.

Nevertheless, I must commend all the tribes for preparing very well. Honestly, I lowered my expectations because the Fitness First Manila tribes had the least amount of time to prepare, considering their branch opened the elimination rounds. But everyone came through admirably, with a clean execution of each tribe’s choreography and enough confidence to pull it off. Congratulations to the ladies who gamely took on the Nike challenge and the instructors who led them.
